Can't connect to local Plex server after install

Go to the web login on ‘xanadu’ via http://xanadu:32400/web/ and see the standard Plex login page. Log in using my lifetime Plex Pass account, and it takes me to the home-page being served by ‘xanadu’.

Down the LHS I can see ‘Home’, ‘Movies and shows’, ‘Live TV’ and ‘Your Media’ with a + next to it. I want to add my digitized blu-rays, so I click on “Your Media” to configure a local service, and it shows me the attached image

I don’t see a way to get past it requesting me to download the service that’s actually already installed, and let me configure it :frowning:

You cannot use a FQDN to claim and initialize the server.

Once it’s claimed and attached to your account, you can.
This is done to prevent someone else from getting control of your server / media should it ever be in a ‘logged out’ condition (when in a remote data center).

  1. Open an incognito window
  2. Open http://127.0.0.1:32400/web
  3. Now PMS will load and greet you with sign in, claiming, and server setup.

If the host is on a different subnet / remote, you’ll need a SSH tunnel.

So I tried setting up VNC, and running with 127.0.0.1, I got past the initial log in, and then it went to spinning orange circle.

So I set up an SSH tunnel:

ssh -L 32400:localhost:32400 -C -N -l simon <ip address>

… and connected to localhost:32400 on my Mac in a ‘Private window’. That pretty much gave me the same thing, but it’s easier to get to the javascript console, which is showing me:

The last lines seem to just be in an infinite loop, and on-screen I just see the orange spinning circle.

Looks like two things of interest:

  1. The web socket not being accessible
  2. The ‘watch together’ message being ‘User missing feature access’.

Any more ideas ? :slight_smile: Or is there any logging I can get you that might help ?

Hold up please?

  1. You should use 127.0.0.1 (the hard set IPv4 loopback on the destination side)
  • ssh -L 8888:127.0.0.1:32400/web -l remote_username IP.addr.of.host

  1. Sign in and let that sit

  2. Open incognito window

  3. In that window open http:127.0.0.1:8888/web

The reason for forcing IPv4 loopback is because IPv6 DNS can and will interfere. There’s no way of knowing (from where I sit) what the default on that host is.

I must apologize as I have no idea what you’re showing me above. It looks like a firewall or proxy log. ??

Seeing “Poll connection” is disturbing. SSH does not “Poll”

I’m pretty sure that’s what I did, but I did use ‘localhost’ instead of 127.0.0.1. Here’s the second try:

In a console window:

simon@mbp ~ % ssh -L 8888:127.0.0.1:32400 -C -N -l simon <IP address of linux server>

(note, I didn’t add /web at the end). Then open up a private Safari window and type into the URL bar:

I get the login prompt, I log in using my email account details, and then I see a spinning orange circle which doesn’t stop spinning :frowning:

I get pretty much the same log (below). This is the output in the javascript console - so it’s whatever the Plex web-client is logging into the javascript console

  1. Stop Plex
  2. sudo tar cfz /tmp/plexlogs.tar.gz “/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Logs”
  3. Now scp /tmp/plexlogs.tar.gz back to your local system
  4. Post here for review please

Huh. Ok, I looked into the system log and saw references to the IP address of ‘lyonesse’ which was an old (not used for a years or so) Plex instance. I shut that down, restarted the one on xanadu, and I’m now seeing the ‘Got it’ screen…

Clicking on that sent me through to server setup, so presumably lyonesse was interfering…

This is not what I instructed. I did instruct to Compress or Disable command execution . The ports you used are not as written.

No further embellishment is needed.

  1. Why are you resetting log files? These timestamps (local to that system) don’t match.

  2. Your reference to Web socket & watch together is not related to the system being addressed. There is one task here – Getting it assigned to your account.

Therefore:

In the SSH tunnel to the machine:

  1. As root, edit “/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Preferences.xml” (vi or nano works well in SSH for this task)

  2. Carefully remove the following Name="Value" pairs from Preferences.xml if they exist. (They should not at this point but I am being thorough)

  • PlexOnlineUsername
  • PlexOnlineEmail
  • PlexOnlineToken
  • PlexOnlineHome

  1. Save the file

  2. Start Plex

  3. Keep the SSH session open.

  4. Back in your local browser , in a new tab, open https://plex.tv/claim

  5. It will present you with a claim token. COPY it to your browser window

  6. We have 5 minutes to complete this task

  7. Return to the SSH session and type:

  8. curl -X POST 'http://127.0.0.1:32400/myplex/claim?token=PASTE_TOKEN_HERE'

  • it will look like curl -X POST 'http://127.0.0.1:32400/myplex/claim?token=claim-xxxxx'

  1. Hit enter and let curl talk to PMS , which will talk to Plex.tv using the Claim Token we just gave it.

  2. If the host can successfully communicate with Plex.tv, it will respond with a bunch of Feature flags (a list)

  3. Keeping the SSH still open, Open https://app.plex.tv

  4. You should now find the server listed

Looks like it’s working. I can log in (remotely, without using the ssh tunnel) and see ‘Movies’ appear at the left, clicking on that I’m seeing things update as the directory is scanned, and I can see the activity monitor running its orange circle. I can click on a movie and play it in the browser…

All told, it looks good :slight_smile:

Apparently having a different Plex server (presumably on the same account) on the same network was the cause. I haven’t even switched that computer on for … I can’t remember when … and I just wanted to copy over the media files…

In any event, shutting down ‘plexmediaserver’ on lyonesse has solved the problem as far as I can tell :slight_smile:

And I’ve only just realized what you meant by ‘embellishment’. I’d been trying the SSH socket to get VNC to work securely, and I just did ‘up-arrow’ and edit to change the port number. I never even noticed the -C and -N flags…

Thanks for all the help - I’ve had never noticed it if you hadn’t asked for the logs, and I really appreciate help on a Sunday as well!

The only time you’ll get in trouble with multiple servers is if they have the same (CLONED) Preferences.xml file .

This is because the UUID info (all the info which makes the server unique) is being updated by two distinct hosts.

That’s the same as two machines with the same IP address – Instant mayhem.

To remedy that, for one of them, – Delete Preferences.xml and let it get a fresh identity as it starts.

There won’t be any confusion after that unless they have the same IP.

Hmmm

‘xanadu’ is a fresh-install ubuntu system, and I installed plex media server by downloading the current archive under ‘Downloads’ on the website and running apt install.

‘lyonesse’ is an old system that I’d forgotten was even running Plex. I do recall, a long time ago, getting some instructions from you on how to clone the original (xanadu) Plex installation over to Lyonesse.

I guess, if the UUID is deterministically created (seeding from ethernet-mac or something) and not just generated at random, that might explain it. I’d expected a fresh install onto a fresh OS to not have any conflicts with old systems, but hindsight is 20/20 :slight_smile:

I looked at your account on plex.tv

There is no reference to lyonesse.

Therefore it had to be the same UUID.
If it were a different UUID but duplicate IP , I would see both.

Server UUIDs are generated by uuidgen which is supposed to be:

The uuidgen program creates (and prints) a new universally unique identifier (UUID) using the libuuid(3) library.
The new UUID can reasonably be considered unique among all UUIDs created on the local system, and among UUIDs created
on other systems in the past and in the future.

This is what i’ve been using when creating new server ID’s since I took over with all the Linux and NAS packaging. It is remotely possible to get an overlap in the lower 24 characters (hex digits) on older systems (how it was done before I took over)

I create a new master UUID (32 bytes) and then derive the the other IDs for the host from that master (guaranteeing they are also unique).

In that case, I don’t see how the UUIDs could have conflicted.

xanadu was reinstalled from scratch. It used to be Ubuntu 16 and now its Ubuntu 20. The disks were repartitioned on install and although I restored user directories and some data on /raid, I don’t see how anything in /var would have made it through.

I can see lyonesse not showing up - assuming the ‘clone’ operation you walked me through for that long-ago move of Plex from xanadu to lyonesse did as you suggested, but I certainly didn’t ‘clone’ it back again this time around.

xanadu is supposed to be a fresh-start for all the apps running on it, so it was a fresh install from the latest download, and a copy over of all the data that used to be on ‘lyonesse’ (still ongoing), which was the only reason it was switched on. I do this, every few years, to stop crud from accruing.

Still, I’m happy that it seems to be working now. All’s well that ends well :slight_smile:
