New to the forums and I can really find an answer to the dilemma I am having. Current running pms and pht on my 2011/12 Mac mini (unclear on the processor as I am away from home) in my home theater and things are working well besides running out of storage (12tb).I got a great deal on a qnap tvs 871t i7 and I can’t decide if I am better off running pms on the qnap or leaving it on the Mac mini and moving my library to the Nas.
My server isn’t taxed too much (1-2 occasional remote mkv streams but mostly music when I am on the go) and since a Nas is new to me I am not sure what to do.
Any I put would be helpful.
Regards
Matthew
Personally, I would set up PMS on the NAS. It’s power requirements are going to be lower in most cases than a laptop or desktop PC would be. (No monitor for one.) and you can leave it on 24/7. That model can take up to 8 internal drives, so adding additional storage to it is going to be super easy. If you look on QNAP’s forums you may see a guy there called Father.Mande. He makes an app for Asustor called HX_Engine that can run PlexRequests.net and a version of PHT through the HDMI output of the device. I think he got a version running on QNAP before he made the Asustor version. Definitely worth the time to get it running!
You can make a pseudo-DVR with it, using apps that are in the app store for the NAS. You can research them yourself, if you want to try it. (HINT: Start here: The Ultimate Server Part 1 - Getting Started — Cutting Cords)
Unless you are familiar with Linux expect there to be some what of a learning curve with the OS. And even if you are conversant with Linux, the version running on your NAS is going to be a bit different than most mainstream flavors.
Porting over your database should be straightforward. Start looking here: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201370363-Move-an-Install-to-Another-System. This should keep all of your watched status, ratings, etc. I wouldn’t shut down your existing PMS install until you have tested and verified everything works on the new on though. (Use 2 different device names. Can always change the NAS’s Plex Device name after you verified the watched status.) You will have to recreate shares. Make sure they are named exactly the same. And double check any tags or permissions before shutting down the first one.
I run PMS on an Asustor AS-7004T NAS with an i3-4330 CPU with over 5K passmarks on it. There is no way I would even think of running PMS on another type of device having set this one up now. I have over 30TB of shows and movies on it now. Should have gotten the 8 bay model…
