I have this one myself and it can play most files with PGS/VOBSUB subtitles just fine. Only the most bandwidth-intense UHD remuxes may have issues.
If you have PC hardware (it doesn’t have to be a very powerful one, it just needs to be fast enough to play all your files with a regular open-source based player software like MPC-BE), you can install Plex Media Player on it and can Direct Play virtually everything with it.
(Provided you have enough network bandwidth. For remote connections, transcoding may be necessary still, if the bandwidth needs to be reduced.)
