Can't get PMS to launch after installing

Hi…
I have plex installed on my desktop (windows 10). When I try to launch the PMS, after installing it… It won’t ‘launch’… it just hangs…
It does not show in my sys tray.
I must admit to uninstalling a corrupt copy yesterday, using a 3rd party uninstaller… read this morning that I shouldn’t have done that… !!

I have tried doing a system restore, but that failed also.

thanks for any help…

Michael

  1. PMS-SHUTDOWN.MSI Error / FIXED!

  2. remove any remants with https://support.plex.tv/articles/202967086-windows-errors-trying-to-upgrade-install-or-uninstall-plex-media-server/

  3. manually delete remaining registry keys and other data: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201941078-uninstall-plex-media-server/

  4. reboot Windows

Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately, I am not very techie… and am not sure what to do with the info you provided, starting at step 1…??

If you are in North America, I can call you, if you like…??

Thanks,
Michael

Sorry, no telephone support.
Do what the user did, which he explains in the second post.

Thanks…
So I have to go to the registry to delete some entries…??

Yes, only one key.

And be careful. You can mess up your Windows installation with regedit quite easily.

i can’t find %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server to delete…??

I deleted the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex key.

That is not a registry location but a folder on your hard drive.
copy
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server
into your clipboard (CTRL+C)
and paste it into the Windows file explorer address bar (CTRL+V)
then press Enter
This should take you directly to this folder.

K… i deleted that folder… it wasn’t exactly like that… It was in my user folder…

So now i should reboot, and try to re-install the PMS…??

Thanks so much for your help and patience… I am not too smart with this stuff…

well… I did all of what I stated above… but the problem persists…???

I don’t know what to do…??

Thanks

Make sure that you don’t have the Windows Media Player disabled in your Windows installation.

Uninstall “Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 – 2019” (using the regular “Apps” control panel in Windows)
Then download the x64 and x86 versions from this page Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads | Microsoft Learn and install them

Download a fresh copy of the Plex Server installer. Maybe use a different web browser than before to do it.

Thanks Otto… I will try all that and let you know… !!

wow… no change…
I push launch after installing the PMS, and it just hangs…

Seems Plex doesn’t want to work for me, after i messed around and tried to remove it and start over…

Are there other programs like plex that I should consider…?? I have googled it, but nothing was obvious or as easy as PLEX is supposed to be…

Is there anything non-standard about your windows installation?
Like e.g. the system drive doesn’t use the drive letter C:, or the hard drive being almost full, or the CPU being an ARM instead of an Intel-compatible model.

no, I don’t think so… It is a new (2 months old) high end computer…

I think my problem derives from me uninstalling the previous version using a 3rd party uninstaller…

I am trying to find a workable restore point to go back to… but that hasn’t worked either.
