Tried upgrading the server yesterday to the newest Plex Pass version, and it didn’t work. Each time, it asks to enter an alternative path to pms.msi, and then says the old version of Plex cannot be removed. I still have this problem despite uninstalling the version I have, removing every trace of it on my hard drive and clearing all Plex entries from the registry.
I’ve tried the method of installing the .NET framework stuff from the troubleshooting page and it’s done nothing, and MicrosoftFixit refuses to work on Windows 10. I’m a lifetime member and a huge fan of Plex, so I really want to get this sorted asap, please!
Wouldn’t hurt to double check that nothing related to Plex is in:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE (if logged in as account that runs plex)
c:\users\username\appdata\
I have no idea how thorough you were, but these are common locations that are overlooked some times when people try and remove software “manually”. My PMS is on Linux these days otherwise I would look around some personally…sorry.
Installation logs, can sometimes help you out as well. I would guess the installer is creating one somewhere.
PROCMON (link below) can also be quite useful to figure out what exactly what a program is doing on your computer (but it can take some getting use to, since it gives you an avalanche of info…filtering is your friend).
Anyways, good luck. I can only provide some general troubleshooting steps, so you’ll have to wait for a Ninja for more indepth info on just Plex.
Anyone? Please? If it helps, I have the pms.msi file now. I asked a friend to install it to their laptop and then transferred it to my PC. It still doesn’t seem to help, but it seemed to help someone else who had this error on this forum.
I’m assuming you mean the part on the left and not the right (i.e. the part ending in 2A7})? Sorry, I’m currently operating beyond my own tech knowledge here so I might be a little dumb. At any rate, that didn’t work I’m afraid
It doesn’t honestly matter (but I technically meant at the end). Renaming is good at least, because you can always revert your changes.
Are you at least able to reinstall the previously old version back?
The registry can be a pretty dangerous place to be playing with if you are not comfortable with what you are doing. It is easy to get frustrated and start changing a bunch of things that could end up making things worse.
If it was me, I would see if the installation log provided additional info after making the registry change. Although, I technically do recommend that you see if a Ninja or Dev is willing to chime in since they can provide more info about the Plex installation program than I can.
Didn’t change the log at all, now I’ve searched in the registry there’s more instances of that id but I’m scared to edit more without being 100% sure of what I’m doing. I hope a ninja helps soon as I’m going to bed shortly and I’ll be at work tomorrow, and due to time zones they probably won’t be able to help whilst I’m actually at my PC…
Not gonna try again tonight unless someone has more suggestions, but here’s the most recent logs from C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp, as I’ve seen these requested in similar threads.
Uninstalled Plex Media Server, wanted to re-install. But It won’t let me. Tried deleting everything related to Plex Media Server, but I get the same message as the original post.
Older installers of Plex do continue and complete, but don’t actually install anything xD …newer installers give the message : "pms-shutdown.msi’ is missing.
