Can't get sound to headphones when using Plex Web

When I try to use Plex Media Player on my mac attached to a monitor via HDMI, the sound always come from the monitor speakers. The option to change to headphones isn’t greyed out, but I can’t select it, and when I look at the audio setting in PMP, Build-in Output is selected.

How do I get the sound to come from my speakers attached to the headphone jack?

Put PMP into its TV mode (important!)
Under Settings - Audio
switch from Device Type = HDMI to Basic

Afterwards, you can switch back to Desktop mode if you like

I had to change it from basic to something else and then select basic again before it would work.
