Server Version#: Version 1.16.5.1554
Player Version#: Plex for Sony (PlayStation 3 01.41)
Hi all - looking for some guidance.
I have a Raspberry Pi “B” running Raspbian 9.
I can play all my media perfectly well via the web-browser or Android app, but when I try to play anything on my PS3 I get a “Sorry there was a problem playing this item” message. I get this for Music (MP3) and Video (regardless of type) files. Literally everything.
I have tried deleting the PS3 device from settings and re-registering - no success.
ps3 app cannot play mp3 (server needs to transcode to MP4, you can try in web browser on ps3 and mp3 won’t work their either) and likely most video needs to be transcoded as it has very limited code support. AFAIK the rPi cannot transcode.
Just FYI we no longer maintain the PS3 app. we keep it available for folks who want to use it, but it no longer receives updates.
It supports mp3 in their own media player only. They don’t allow third party apps to play them because they want you to use their app. Because of this the server needs to transcode to an audio only M4A.
You can see this your self by playing an MP3 in the Plex web app on your computer which will work. If you try to play it in the Plex web app in the PS3 web browser it won’t work.
So after the chat which basically said that the ps3 didn’t support mp3 and the pi can’t transcode on the fly I spent a couple of days researching the best way to transcode my music library offline so as to prepare it to be pi and ps3 friendly.
Yesterday I transcoded a track using ffmpeg, uploaded it to my pi and started a library rescan.
This morning I opened plex on the ps3 and attempted to play the track. It worked!
And so did the mp3 in the same folder. And every other mp3 that I have tested, none of which have been converted into m4a.
So I decided to try playing an avi file. That also worked albeit with an unwatchable frame rate. At the time the pi cpus were 90% idle so I’m pretty sure it wasn’t trying to transcode so I guess the ps3 must be trying to do so.
