Can't schedule recording a movie with the same name as one already in my library

I already have the movie Arthur (2011) in my library. When I try to schedule recording of Arthur (1981), it goes into the recording priority list but says “No upcoming airings” even though I’ve selected it from the Program Guide and it won’t go into the schedule. Surely, the DVR should be able to distinguish between 2 movies with the same name but different versions. I have included the year in my file name as recommended. Am I missing something?

That definitely sounds like a potential bug. Have you checked the logs around the time of the airing to see what they report?

I can confirm this. Was trying to schedule a movie that was in my library and said “no scheduled airings” and when I deleted it it and re-added it will now record tomorrow at 8:30am

I am seeing SO MANY POSTS with this same complaint that this HAS to be eroding confidence in PLEX.

Need to ALLOW DUPLICATE RECORDINGS and trust the user will pick which to keep, rather than PLEX mandating that you keep the very first copy you EVER recorded and just put up with it. OTA customers have weather dropouts to contend with, such as myself. Before Plex I simply recorded 6 or 8 copies and kept the largest filesize. Dropouts=less data recorded.

There is already a feature to overwrite files of a HIGHER resolution. We need a feature to overwrite files of the SAME resolution IF the filesize is larger. From reading other posts, it also appears there should be a feature to ALLOW duplicate copies to be recorded but it could be contested if this ALLOW needs to be global or “case at a time”.

This problem is getting to be a deal-breaker for me. Only solution WE on THIS END can do is to take ALL RECORDINGS AWAY FROM PLEX as soon as they are created and so that these duplicates are thus never detected and hence allowed. That means to YOUR MARKETING DEPARTMENT that people will be keeping KODI or some other program running as their primary system and Plex becomes “JUST” a DVR. … … cause for us so far that is the ONLY solution to a critical flaw.

Quit thinking about cable customers… what OTA customers need will not disturb a single cable customer. Add us back into the people you wish to keep as customers.

Same thing here. Man of the House (1995 with Chevy Chase) in my library. I can’t record Man of the House with Tommy Lee Jones. When I move the 1995 version out of my library, it schedules to record right away.

I agree that this is a good idea. I have similar issues when recording films. Last week I set ‘Robin Hood’ (2010 version) to record from the Program Guide so Plex definitely knew it was on, in fact it was listed several times that week. When I checked the Recording Schedule, nothing. Afterwards, I realised that I already have a copy of the Disney film ‘Robin Hood’ (1973 version) in my movies library. In fact IMDB lists 12 different versions of this story all with the same name, so the ability to save a 2nd version of a film would be a great idea.

Overwriting lower resolution doesn’t really help if the content is different, but Plex usually manages to include film date on the saved files so I still don’t really understand why the Program Scheduler can’t cope with this?

Just checked and adding the broadcast date to the existing file made no difference, nothing appears in the Program Scheduler. Changing the name of the file completely and deleting the film from the library, then deleting the film which has no upcoming airings, then going back to the program guide and adding as a new recording. Now it’s in the scheduler and is set to record. Long winded, but works. Will re-rename the original back tomorrow.

Bit of a pain in the neck, as it means an extra few steps to get it into the movies library, but I have another library for home videos called ‘other videos’. When recording a movie with the same name in my movies library, and hit this problem, I simply -> record -> add to library (other videos). Records properly, but obviously puts the movie in another directory, so I have to manually name it and move it into my Movies folder for it to be picked up in the library

I’m seeing the same problem. Is there a place to officially report this so the developers know?

The same happens with TV series. Porridge is a good example. I have the complete original series but it now won’t record the new remake (and if it did I would be worried about it overwriting the original)

This is getting absolutely ridiculous. Today I scheduled a few more movies for recording and I had to temporarily move three more movies out of the main movie folder, rescan my library (waiting for a few minutes while this is going on), and re-schedule the ones that Plex refused to add to the recording schedule. Then the older movies will be unavailable for a couple of weeks until the new ones are recorded, and then I’ll have to remember to move them back. Not only that, but Plex will re-scan them as being “new”, so I’ll lose the old “added date” and other information.

Why does Plex even care that I have “GenericMovieName (1995)” when I want to record “GenericMovieName (2015)”?
