Can't secure connect via wifi from another house, but can with cellphone data?

Hi – lately my plex has been running into some issues regarding ‘secured connection’.

r/PleX - Plex secured connection

Basically, I’ve set the secured connection to ‘manual’ and now, where I am outside of my local network, say outside on my phone, I am able to connect just fine. However, when I am in a different house, I am unable to connect. I find this strange – why is it that in this manual port mode, I can connect via my phone’s data and access Plex, but when I use a different network connection from another house, I am unable to do the same?

I’m really noob to this IP stuff so I am kind of confused. Any insight will help!

i too am having this problem pretty similar. over the weekend i was out of town and could not connect to my server.

after i did this :

it works, mostly. Some people can connect to me, some can not. been really shaking my head at to what the issue is.

Maybe you and I both need a certificate reset by an employee?

yea – this problem only started recently and I’m not sure I’ve done anything different on my end. It used to be that my Plex was not set to a manual port. But even setting it to a manual port hasn’t helped.

I’ve also done manual port forward via my router as well. No avail.

Would a reset of certificate by an employee help? How do we go about obtaining this?

@thederk123

Your certificate was stuck . (it was trying to renew)

If you look in the logs, you should see either 422 or 429 error codes.

I have reset your certificate.

Restart the server

Interesting – can you explain what this means? that my ‘certificate was stuck’?

@f.wah

You have 7 servers listed. Which one is not working.

Is it possible to reset? I have a server running from NAS920. The old ones may have been legacy ones where I was not subscribed. If you can somehow remove them, maybe that could help?

that did it! thank you

“Stuck” ==

  1. Your server realizes its certificate is due to renew (every 90 days)
  2. It sends the request to Plex.tv about a week early.
  3. Plex.tv queues it up and gets the new certificate ready
  4. When the server’s existing certificate does expire, it asks for the new one
  5. That certificate is downloaded and installed (all behind the scenes)

In your case, “Stuck” - It started creating the new certificate but that new certificate did not complete (become ready). We see it as “Generating” status.

When it’s truly ready, we see “Generated” and the log entry of what was done.

Oh! What can I do to ‘unstuck’? I didn’t even know there were 7 servers somehow associated with this account? If you let me know how, I can figure out (maybe) which one the Nas920 is…And then I guess I will restart?

Frank,

I looked through all those servers. I realized your DS920 was the only active one.

All the others hadn’t been seen in years.
I removed them (they won’t show up in plex/web anymore either)

In your DS920,

  1. Stop Plex
  2. Open FileStation
  3. Navigate PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/Cache
  4. DELETE cert-v2.p12
  5. Start PMS
  6. Give it an extra minute to startup and download the certificate again.

If that doesn’t resolve it, Please grab me a ZIP file of the “Logs” directory under “Plex Media Server” and attach it here.

I don’t think I did this right -_-'.
I’ve attached the log. I doubled zipped it because it was 28mb in the first zip…
Uploading: Logs (2).zip…
Logs (2).zip (2.2 MB)

This is a little confusing.

  1. It knows it doesn’t have a certificate so requests one but has trouble getting it.

Is the Syno wired to the router ??

yes → NAS920 is directly connected to a router!

In this sequence:

  1. Shutdown the Syno
  2. Restart the router
  3. Give it ample time to come up again (2-3-4 minutes ???)
  4. Start the Syno
  5. Let Plex start
  6. Wait 3-4 minutes after the Syno can be logged into
  7. Now download the Plex logs again and attach them here

Ok – I will this Saturday. Thanks for now. I’m just remote and don’t have access to the router physically.

Hi @ChuckPa – I’ve done the following and then redownloaded the log:
Logs_2.zip (2.4 MB)

  1. Shutdown the Syno
  2. Restart the router
  3. Give it ample time to come up again (2-3-4 minutes ???)
  4. Start the Syno
  5. Let Plex start
  6. Wait 3-4 minutes after the Syno can be logged into
  7. Now download the Plex logs again and attach them here

Do you see the problem with the connection going stupid? If so, any tips on how to solve this? Thanks a lot!

I’m seeing a problem from this IP.

192-0-2XX-1XX.8b11b7e7b3c94caba8a50f57a9dfe390.

somewhere in Ontario?

I’m in Ontario, yes. If this is the address of my remote location, it would explain why anything connected through the router at the remote location doesn’t work with plex?

I’m trying to track it down.

I will need to look more at the logs.

Also, might you know if your modem/router has DNS rebinding protection?
