Can't use Plex Server, keeps signing in as a web device

Server Version#: 1.21.1
Player Version#:

I’m new here, not sure what I’m doing wrong but it seems to me like there is a glitch somewhere.

I recently upgraded my QNAP Nas to an new one; the model I’m running is on the supported list and is fully supported.
When I open the plex server from the nas, I get an error saying “no soup for you! you do not have access to this server” There is no error code.
When I log into my plex account though the server, I can only access it as a web device and can’t add any of the content on my server.

I have tried removing the old nas from the list of authorized devices to no avail.
Is this some kind of port blocking issue with my router? I’m not sure where to start troubleshooting this as it gives me so little information. Please help!

Can you quickly confirm the time/date settings on your new NAS (which is it, btw?) are correct?

The model is TS-451D2.
The time was incorrect, I have since synced it with a server but unfortunately the problem is still there.

Restart Plex on your NAS now the time has been corrected.

I’m not sure how to restart the plex server given I can’t access it, so I restarted the whole nas. The issue is still there :frowning:

you do its from the NAS admin interface.

I still can’t get the media server working, it still has this bullshit access denied error :frowning:

sorry, I’m not sure what else to say. If you search “no soup for you” on this forum, there is a lot of guidance though.

Ok. Thanks for your help anyway.

You can start/stop/restart PMS in App Center just as you do with any other app.

I would like you to do the following:

  1. Stop Plex

  2. Create a Shared Folder named PlexData (named exactly this way). It doesn’t matter where you put it. It is a placeholder.

  3. Start Plex. Let it run for 30 seconds, Stop Plex

  4. Install the QNAP Text Editor app

  5. Open File Station

  6. Navigate to the PlexData share.

  7. Click “Plex Media Server

  8. You will see Preferences.xml

  9. Copy then paste using the mouse to make a backup copy (just in case)

  10. Right-click it → “Open with Text Editor”

  11. Very carefully, remove the following Preference="Value" pairs. A single space between each Name="value" pair is all that’s required.
    a. PlexOnlineUsername
    b. PlexOnlineToken
    c. PlexOnlineEmail
    h. PlexOnlineHome (this is optional. might not exist. no worries if not)

  12. Save the file

  13. Open https://app.plex.tv

  14. Settings - Authorized Devices - Server (dropdown)

  15. Find your QNAP server name (there may be multiple)

  16. REMOVE it (or them)

  17. We will bring it back in a moment

  18. Sign OUT of Plex/web (upper right corner)

  19. Close browser windows

  20. Open fresh window to QNAP

  21. Start Plex

  22. Open http://ip.addr.of.qnap:32400/web

  23. PMS will behave as if a new installation. This is expected.

  24. Proceed through the ‘Got It’ and Setup Wizard except DO NOT create new sections.

  25. Continue through setup until you arrive at the Dashboard.

  26. Now you can change other Preferences to suit your local needs.
