I’ve spent HOURS getting my movies into categories (yes, I know categories aren’t available in most things… I’m OCD and like the clean-up) and making sure all of my movies are titled correctly and linked correctly to the right movie. This evening I got on and noticed two movies at the top - out of their category and not linked with a movie. I matched them up quickly and added them to the category only to discover that one of the categories was missing - not even an option when I was typing. I went out and checked and the category was still there, but all 9 moves were no longer in it. I checked out the other category from this movie and discovered that it now claimed 6 movies instead of 20. It was still available when I typed the categories but many of the movies that were supposed to be in there no longer had a category listed. The more I looked, the more problems I discovered. Many categories were still showing up with the original collection of photos but now saying there were 0 movies in them. Many more were missing several movies but still had some in them. What happened? I haven’t done anything except watch 1 TV episode on my Roku today. I didn’t change settings, or touch anything or do anything different. I’d appreciate any suggestions. I’m really not looking forward to doing all that work again, only to have it mess up again.
Attached is a picture that shows the category “Princess Diaries” that is now empty but still showing the pictures of the movies that used to be in it. It also shows the “Road Movies” which I had to completely repopulate and “Rooney Garland” which didn’t change at all. The two Bob Hope movies (Princess and the Pirate & The Private Navy of Sargent O’Farrell) WERE both in the “Bob Hope” category, and now are not, although 6 movies remained in that category. I’d appreciate anything anyone can tell me please!!
the good news for you… Plex does not automatically delete the collections tag (“category”).
the bad news… that doesn’t explain HOW EXACTLY your setup got messed up…
By any chance… Is there anybody beyond yourself who can change the data on your server?
The collections with 0 items means that no movies are left which have this particular collection tag set. This leaves an “empty shell” of the collection (no movies, but the original posters, background and description).
No, for all of the movies that were no longer in their collections, the tag fields were empty. When I tried to re-add the tag fields, SOME of the tags were still in the drop-down but some weren’t - even though their collection might still be listed (but empty). Does that make sense? I’m trying to explain it correctly.

As @tom80H mentioned above: even if there is no movie left in a collection, the collection itself will remain until you explicitly delete it.
I understand that. My point is that SOME remained, some did not and some even removed the category from the drop-down suggestions.
Sometime between last night and this afternoon, it has happened again.
Since this didn’t appear to be a “normal” problem, and since the categories option has started showing on my Roku, I went to the trouble (a week ago) of putting everything back where it belongs. This afternoon, many Bob Hope movies are no longer in the Bob Hope category (some don’t even have the posters showing in the icons), 2 of the Andy Hardy movies are no longer in it’s category etc. What’s happening??? LOL!
