Certain Movies Never Start Playing

First…the background of my issue:

  • I run Plex Server on my iMac and always have the latests updates.

  • I run the Plex client from an Apple TV 4K device using a wireless connection.

  • My video files are stored on a network NAS drive.

  • All videos are 1080p and have been encoded to .mp4.

  • I play files from Plex libraries using the shuffle feature.

  • Problem files play just fine using Apple preview function, Quicktime, or other video clients like VLC etc.

I notice that sometimes 2 or 3 episodes will play just fine. No signs of video buffering at all. Then, when the 4th random episode starts, the file will never start playing. The screen stays black with the spinning Apple wheel. I have left the client in this state for hours and the file never starts playing. I usually back out of the play menu using the remote, and attempt the shuffle function again. It seems pretty hit or miss whether the next attempted file plays or just stays on a black screen. Sometimes this can happen once…or it can happen repeatedly and I have to hit the shuffle button 4-5 times before the client finds a video file it starts playing immediately.

I’m getting tired of babysitting video file playback. Can anyone offer advice on what I can check to attempt to fix this issue?

Thanks,
Nick
