Half the time, files don't play first time - what am I missing

Hi. I have Plex server running on Windows Server 2016. It is on the latest version. It’s an i7, 32GB, OS sits on a 512GB SSD and all media on a 32TB RAID 5. Nvidia P4000 for external clients. It’s connected to the network via a 48 port Cisco GB switch. I have two main clients, Nvidia Shield and FireTV gen 2 boxes. I have had this issue for a while now, where you go to watch something - mainly watching TV shows at the moment. You click an episode and click resume, you get a wheel just turning. I have tried leaving it there for a minute or two and it stays the same. You hit back, then resume again and you sometimes get playback to start straight away, sometimes you’ll get the spinning wheel again. If you click play and choose start from beginning, I have had more luck in this starting playback first time. Also, when the show has ended and it’s got the next episode ready so you just click okay/enter etc, the same thing normally happens, just a spinning wheel. All clients are connected to the same cisco switch, all running at 1GB. I just don’t understand why this is getting worse. Does anyone have anything to suggest that I check out on the server or clients please?

This is an Android TV issue that I’ve seen as well. ■■■■ like this makes me miss the Roku.

I don’t know what to do either at the moment. Finally have someone from Plex looking at a different issue I reported (video frozen but audio plays in the background for first 5-10 seconds of a video.) Hoping to make some progress there and then maybe this can also be tackled.

Mainly commenting to say I have the issue too.

Thanks for the reply. That makes me feel better that it doesn’t seem to be some sort of configuration issue with my setup and that it is happening to others.

I frequently play a new episode and the video is stuck but the audio is playing. It then catches up a few seconds later and all is good. It’s done this for a little while now but it doesn’t bother me compaired to the failing to play issue.

I noticed this as well on my Fire Stick. Started a few weeks/months ago. My server is on a Mac however. Which, in my mind, would indicate the problem is with the player.

[I’m talking about the original comment: spinning when you start or resume play]

I’ve also got that issue, using the Alexa app to access plex for my home. I’ve got to say, “Alexa, tell plex to play, (whatever)”, three or four times sometimes.

Configuration:

Qnap TS-231P3 NAS /updated to 8gb. (usual 2% or less system load)
Direct mapped port 32400 through router for Plex
Newest version of Plex server. (had the same problem on previous versions.)
12gb of RAID storage. Pretty minimal setup. No cloud contact, standard programs on NAS.

Android phones and tablets, no problem, even away from home and wi/fi.

PC’s. no problem. Here, and family from their homes, no problem.

I’ve got 6 amazon dots, and one amazon show, (purchased in '20), that about 90% of the time I have to tell to tell plex to play or shuffle something about 3 or 4 times. I don’t know if it’s the skill, but I suspect so. the Echo will respond with, “Playing”, or “Shuffling”, and then nothing. Strange.

Updated 10/3/2021. When playing through the echo dots, or roku tv. the Plex server will stream for about 5-10 minutes and just stop. With the echos, sometimes telling them to resume will work, and sometimes not. From what I understand, this problem is pretty widespread, and I’ve seen no solutions to any of the problems that we seem to be having, from the Plex team. Hoping there will be a solution. I don’t want Tidal, or any of the premium music/movie services. I just want to be able to stream my music collection, until I tell the device to stop streaming…

All dots are between a year and two years old.

Looks like you are right. With what others have said, seems to be Android.
