Change Home Screen

How do I change home screen back to the way it was instead of the current clutters.

I want to change it back to:

Recently added Movies
Recently added TV Shows
Recently added Music
On Deck
Continue Watching
etc.

Not only that, but have them all individually selectable. It’s amazing how the people who create these apps have no idea what customers actually want and never seem to ask, instead forcing a bunch of “features” no one asked for.
Why isn’t the Home Screen where the Libraries are listed, instead of them being separate screens?
On Emby the Home Screen shows Movies, TV, Music, Continue Watching, Recently Added, Live TV, and anything else you want, and is totally customizable. I’d still be using it if their latest update didn’t introduce a bunch of bugs and fundamentally change the way my music is displayed and accessed.
As I said, they never seem to ask what end users want.

You won’t be able to arrange it exactly as it was in the past, but you can get pretty close.

First, enable the server setting Settings (Server Name) → Libraries → Merge Recently Added items. This will cause all same-type recently added hubs to be merged on the home screen.

Next, change the order of your pinned libraries in the sidebar to match the order in which you’d like their hubs to appear on the home screen. In your case, change the order to movies, TV shows, and then music.

A couple of things to note:

  • On Deck no longer exists; it has been merged with Continue Watching.
  • Continue Watching will (currently) always appear as the first hub on your home screen.

There’s some more detailed information regarding how to manage your home screen using the new functionality here:

The current home screen is absolutely crap. The developers have no idea how to create a usable UI. Way too much clutters.

The old home screen was perfect. You get all the new and useful information you want in one place. No need to spend hours finding stuffs.

Also the new search is really bad. It now too dumb to know that . is a space. In the old search Star.War you get Star War. In the new search you get nothing.

Yeah I look at it and that just way too complicated.

Hmm
You can eliminate the redundant hubs on your home screen in just one step. Just enable the first setting I mentioned above:
Settings (Server Name) → Libraries → Merge Recently Added items

That will get you most of the way there by eliminating all the redundant hubs (by merging them).

That is absolutely asinine. We basically want recently added and continue watching/listening. Not a bunch of useless BS

So basically we are stuck with a blank home screen or have a bunch of nonsense. Stupid.

I’m not sure what you mean by blank home screen. Merging the recently added hubs doesn’t remove them. It just combines all same-type hubs into one. For example, if you have two separate movie libraries pinned to your sidebar, you’ll only get a single recently added hub if you enable this setting. If this setting is disabled, you’d have two recently added movies hubs.

The same applies to all the other library types; their hubs will either be separate or combined, depending on the state of this setting.

The only way you’d end up with an empty (or nearly so) home screen is if you unpinned everything from your sidebar (or maybe of you unchecked all hubs in your server’s library settings or excluded libraries in your library settings).

In short, the items pinned to your sidebar determine the libraries which contribute your home screen and the order in which they do so. The settings under Settings (Server Name) → Libraries determine what/how those libraries contribute to your home screen.

Blank: devoid of content. Although it just started displaying this instead, because Plex is garbage.

Home Screen

Gotcha. Though I wasn’t unclear on the definition of “blank,” I was more trying to understand how your statement related to the setting being discussed :upside_down_face: .

At any rate, if you’re interested in trying to figure out what’s gone wrong in your case, it may be better to start another thread. I’m sure there are folks who’d be willing to help.

Here is my normal ‘blank’ home screen (on my Rokus the content area is literally blank). It’s set this way since I can’t have ONLY the things I want here (Continue Watching/Listening, Recently Added) without useless recommendations and random other nonsense. Apparently the home screen was crashing because I was in the middle of watching a movie. When I marked it as watched, then unwatched, the “blank” home screen came back without the error. Garbage.

Home Screen 2

Have you gone into Settings → Manage → Libraries and clicked on the blank space next to your libraries? When you hover over that space, the text manage recommendations appears, which when clicked expands the library to show a bunch of check boxes.

You can not only pick which items appear on the home page (if at all), but which of these entries even appear when on the “recommendations” page of each particular library. Using the drag bar, you can choose which order they appear if you have multiple entries checked.

I wish you could pick more options here or make your own custom options (Favorited items). I also think this level of customization should be user-based, not account-based.

-Note, I am usually annoyed by software attempting to “recommend” things to me. I know what is in my collection, and where they all are. Having to hand over control of this to a “library” software like this or Calibre kind of scares me, but I got used to it.

Settings (Server Name) → Libraries → Merge Recently Added items

Doesn’t do anything that I can tell.

I want the home screen the same as before and not all junks it currently has.

EDIT:

It looks like it work. I refresh it a few time and got back almost the old home screen without all the junk. No “on deck” tho.

Thanks for the help!

Merging recently added items seems to me to only work if you have multiple of the same kind of library (TV show vs Movies). I keep my animated shows and my live-TV shows separate from eachother. In fact, lately I have been adding new TV libraries for late-night talk hosts (Colbert, SNL, etc) and yet another for the 10 or so news programs throughout the day.

Checking this option will make it so - for example - if you add a new simpsons episode (animated TV show) and a new NCIS episode (live TV), then there would be a single merged “Recently added in TV Shows” listing that shows both.

This seems to kind of mirror the behavior of the old interface when it treated all “tv show” and all “movies” libraries you added as being the same thing. Almost like the devs were shocked - SHOCKED I tell you - that people manage their own libraries of movies and shows and don’t want the software to mix the categories on its own thank-you-very-much.

No problem!

I went through those settings but there is nothing to select Continue Watching, Continue Listening, or Recently Added. That’s all I want, but the idiots who work on this think we would rather have our own content recommended to us.
By the way, the error message appears any time a movie or show is in the middle of being watched, so the very thing I want displayed is crashing the home screen. This app is garbage.
I’m going back to Emby with it’s relatively few bugs. At least I’ll have what I want built right into the app and easy to customize without having to spend a week in a help forum only to find out it can’t be done because no one cares what the user wants.

Well, I’m sorry to see you go. I only just discovered Plex myself a few months ago, and fell in love with it. I know it has its quirks, but it kind of sounded to me like the issues you had with it were solvable. I’d like to try to get it to work, but I’m not going to press you if your mind is made up. If you wish to try to work with me/us to get this working, then read on:

EDIT: Continue Watching does not appear to be a choice in the individual libraries. how odd

I don’t know about Continue Listening, as I don’t use audio that much.

“Recently added” is an option for me. It’s actually the only option I have enabled for each of my libraries. My home screen shows
“Recently Added in TV Shows” followed by
“Recently Added in Animated Shows” followed by
“Recently Added in Anime Shows” followed by
“Recently Added in Talk Shows” followed by
“Recently Added in Movies” followed by
“Recently Added in Animated Movies” followed by
“Recently Added in Anime Movies” followed by
“Recently Added in DVR TV” followed by
“Recently Added in DVR Movies”

The order is set by the order that I have my libraries pinned to the left-hand side. Inside each library itself are a whole new array of options in the recommended section. I have nearly all the categories selected for each library, and the order is different per library. The only concern I have is that this order is set per the server, which means none of the users can modify the order of these entries themselves, or whether to show other categories on their Home page.

Moot point since the latest update completely boogered it. Now I can’t access anything from Plex. It’s a good thing I spent the day setting up Emby.
