Customizing Plex Web Home Screen

So apparently Plex doesn’t want us customizing our home screens anymore, because the pencil icon disappeared this week and this message appeared on this page:

I don’t want Plex’s river of garbage on my home screen - how do I remove it now that the pencil icon has disappeared?

I think you need this page now:

(You would think they could have put a link on that old page)

This is the dumbest thing ever however. Someone like me gives every show a different entry to be pinned and so now when you log into the server it lags like crazy because its being forced to load every single entry on the freaking main page now instead of just being organized into “Recently added tv shows” “Recently Added Movies” and so on. Thats just dumb and I don’t see how anyone could have wanted something like this as it doesn’t make any sense.

A post was split to a new topic: Posters being cut off and square

You can set the check box at the very bottom of the library configuration to merge the recently added hubs of the same media type (e.g. movies, tv, music) – see " Merge Recently Added" in the support article linked by blim5001.

I appreciate the link - there is some good info on that page. However, it doesn’t really answer the question: before Apr 22, we had a high level of control of what appeared on the Home Screen. Now we don’t. For instance, I have new rows appearing on my Home Screen called “Recent Playlists,” “Recent Channels,” and “Shows On Now.” I didn’t ask for these and I don’t want them there. How do I remove them? Prior to last Thu, I could just hover over the row title and click the little red “x” that appeared. But not any more.

Also, assuming I have a way to remove rows, I’d also like to reorder them. Can I still do that? If not, why not? Why did Plex feel the need to fix something that wasn’t broken?

All explained in the support article linked by blim5001. You can set checkboxes for each hub/row for your own home, the respective library recommended tab and your shared user’s home. Those configuration “rows” can also be re-arranged.

haha, I was not implying it was a good change, just where the new support page was

Me, I am not a fan (and that is being polite).

As a user it feels like it has got more complicated to set it up how you want and more restrictive as to what you can actually do.

Okay but since I have about 200 libraries pinned in the sidebar and now their all appearing on the home screen how does what you said actually help? People use the Recently Added section to just check merely when new stuff is added for a specific category. I have people who watch my recently added tv shows and only that I have people who watch just recently added movies. An now the home screen shows them literally EVERYTHING instead of just showing them the 4 tabs they only cared about, Recently Added TV, Recently Added Movies, Recently Added Videos, and Recently Added Music. They don’t care about the other stuff.

You see how big that scroll wheel is now on the home screen and the only thing on it thats actually useful on the home screen is the Continue Watching tab that stayed there. These people when they start up plex now are frozen on plex for a good 2-5 minutes because plex is now stuck forcefully loading everything thing on the Home screen itself instead of just showing the old 4 tabs. An this is also how it looks on the console and on mobile/tv where people don’t have a choice but to be forced to load into this main screen.

It seems your personal choice of how to configure your server puts you in a bad spot with this new way-of-working – I’m not arguing that.

As for your question… it helps as in it shows how you can configure/customize which hubs will show for which library. I’m not saying it’ll be quick but this is the way to go if you want to remove library hubs from that home screen.

Appreciate the help, but just so you know, there is no way to do what I’m trying to do within the new interface. And checking those boxes has no effect on what appears on the home screen. Also, dragging the “rows” into a different order has no effect on the home screen either.

Is there someone from Plex that we can mention in this thread to get a response?

Not sure I can follow… your previous post was about hubs showing up that you don’t want to see on your home screen. So I take it you unchecked those hubs for the “Home” column of the recommendation preferences?
After that they’re still showing on your home page/view?

With this configuration I get exactly 2 hubs for my “Filme” (lit. “Movies”) library to show on the home page:

  • “Recently Added Movies”
  • “Seasonal Movies” → this will only show on special occurrences (last I noticed it was around X-Mas)

I’ve unchecked all the stuff I don’t want to clutter my home screen as I still can see that on the library’s “recommendations” tab.

For the fun of it I checked “Recently Released Movies” which made it appear on the home page. Dragging it further down in the list of hubs did result in this hub to be displayed below the “Recently Added Movies” hub.
Not saying something have caused an hiccup on your setup – just saying it works as explained on my system. So if it doesn’t work on yours I’d be interested to figure out why that might be.

As you haven’t mentioned before… what version of Plex Media Server do you have installed and on what platform? Are you using the hosted or bundled version of Plex Web (http://app.plex.tv/desktop vs. http://[PMS IP address]:32400/web)?

I have tried unchecking all of the boxes and that doesn’t have any effect.

Here’s what does work: if I unpin Playlists from the menu on the left, for example, then the hub called “Recent Playlists” disappears from the Home Screen, but as soon as I pin it back on the menu, the hub comes back. That’s not what I want. I want Playlists on the menu, but I don’t want the hub on the Home Screen. I could still make that happen a week ago, but now I can’t.

I’m running PMS on my Synology NAS (ver 1.22.3.4392) and I’m using the web interface (app.plex.tv/desktop).

Can you do it step by step?
Pinning/unpinning the Playlists section in the main navigation has no effect inside my setup.

Can you pin the Playlists section and then only add a check for the Library Playlists item in the recommendation settings for this library (using only the Home column).
Afterwards, please check your home screen (optionally reload the entire page) to confirm if the Recent Playlists hub is showing next to those other hubs of that library on your Home page.

Next… go back to the recommendation settings and uncheck the Library Playlists item for the Home page. Return to the Home page and check if it’s gone.

If there’s no effect… can you repeat the same using a different browser?

All I can tell you is I can see the effect immediately when reloading the Home page whenever I check/uncheck one of those boxes. The only dependency is for the library itself to be pinned (the pin status of Playlists doesn’t have an effect on my system).

So I went into the Movies library, clicked the Manage Recommendations and then checked the Home box for Library Playlists. That does have an effect - within the “Recent Playlists” hub, it filters out all playlists that don’t contain movies. So instead of showing me all playlists, it only shows four. But then when I uncheck the same box, it goes right back to showing me all playlists in the hub. But the hub stays there, no matter what I check or uncheck. The only way to remove the hub is to unpin Playlists from the menu.

Does this only happen with the playlist recommendations or do you get this mix-up with other hubs too (just checking if we’ve only been focusing on the playlist issue as an example or if it’s turned out to work for the others)?

The other two hubs I’m trying to get rid of are “Recent Channels” and “Shows on Now” - they both disappear when I unpin “Live TV & DVR.” But then this is just weird - after I do that, those two hubs go away, but I then have two hubs both called “Recent Playlists,” one with four playlists, and one with all of my playlists. It doesn’t make any sense.
