Change ownership of a server

Server Version#: 1.19.5.3112
Player Version#: (various, but most are current)

I swear this used to be easier, but I’ve been banging my head against the wall for a while trying to figure it out. When I first started the Plex thing, no of the locations I wanted to run them had fast enough internet for remote streaming, so I just setup individual servers at each location. Added bonus, each server acts as a redundant, off-site backup for the media.

Anyways, two of them are under my main account, (a plex premium pass acct) but one is under a separate, free account. It’d be easier at this point to have them all under my main account but I can’t figure out how to take ownership of the other one. I’ve logged out of it, logged into my main account, I’ve tried the ip address, I’ve tried the 127.0.0.1 address, but nothing ever “sees” the server and it always redirects to the app.plex.tv web address when I’m trying to login under the main account. I also tried logging into the web address from a computer on the network with a fresh install of PMS (whatever the current version 1.20.something) and no luck. The closest I’ve gotten is it just asks which of my existing servers I want to make my preferred server, none of which are either local or remotely available, so I don’t know why it’s asking about those.

Also, the other main thing I want to accomplish is to keep the existing user on that server (or at least recreate it) with all the current view history intact. The server is running on a raspberry pi 4, running raspbian (so, debian). I feel like it used to be simple, when you logged into your account, if it saw a server on the network it would ask if you want to claim it. I normally also run a vpn across most of the network, but I did temporarily disable it to rule that out. They either changed something that I’m not seeing, or I’m just over-looking something simple.

Alternately, if there’s any way to bring my plex pass features to the other account I’d just do that since all I really want to accomplish is to add a couple users under that server. I did add that account to my main account as a shared account or something, but it didn’t grant access to plex pass features. If there’s no way to do it that way, then back to my bigger mess.

If your server isn’t properly signing out from your secondary account you can try this procedure:

If this is still giving you issues, try connecting to the server’s local IP address using a private browser window to avoid any old cookies or session ids to interfere.
I believe you’ll have some trouble to transfer the watch history of your secondary account to the main account without heavily tinkering in the database.

When juggling with a second plex.tv account, make sure to use your browser’s “privacy”/“incognito” mode. To ensure that none of the cookies from the main account is used when accessing the second account.

I still have a few things to try and work through from that article, but I did notice something odd today, when I went to add some media to the server it asked what server I wanted (while logged into the normal, secondary account for that device). It was suddenly recognizing the server I’d installed on the PC on the same network, which wasn’t even running at the time. Also, I normally use incognito mode on the PC, but not usually on the raspberry pi, I’ll give that a go too.
