I want to move PMS from a linux VM to a windows bare metal system. During the installation on windows I used second free plex account (instead of my primary plex pass one). Now after all settings are done on windows I shut down my old installation on linux and logged in to the new windows installation with my primary plex pass user. But it can’t connect to it - why ever.
I observed my firewall logs (although I’m now in the same network as my PMS) and noticed that my client tries to connect to the IP of the old linux VM - even when I open a browser on the windows system itself and use localhost::port oder ip:port it.
If the (Windows) server had previously been linked to your second Plex account, you’ll need to sign-it out before you can access it with your primary Plex account.
As for why Plex might still be looking for the old server…
The old server is still “signed in” – meaning your account knows it used to be there and tries to reconnect your old libraries. Given it’s no longer there, those old libraries will probably show as “offline” or unavailable.
You should be able to remove the old server from your account in Settings > <Your Account> > Authorized Devices → Server (https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/devices/pms)
There was no need to use a separate plex account to set up the second server. You can have almost as many servers in one account as you like.
Sign in and sign out is done separately for the web app in your browser and the server(s).
You need to:
open a web browser and sign in to your new (now superfluous) plex account.
this should enable you to access the configuration settings of your newly set up server.
Settings - Server - General - “Sign Out”. This should free the server from its account.
now sign out the web app as well. (click on your avatar icon, top-right)
Clear all cookies from the domain *.plex.tv from your web browser. Close the web browser.
load the web app from the IP address of your new plex server (important!) http://ip-address-of-server:32400/web
sign in to your old plex account. Then wait. It should alert you after a few minutes about an “unclaimed” plex server in the local network.
Claim it.
scrap the libraries which are currently pinned to the left side bars of all your plex clients. Pin the libraries of your new server in their stead. You can use the setup wizard for new clients to speed up this process:
