Choppy video and freeze up on Shield TV Tube

This is on a 2019 Nvidia Shield TV “tube”

After watching things for about 10 minutes on my shield tv the frame rate becomes jittery and starts acting like a DVD/BluRay that has a scratch on it… It IS NOT buffering because the sound keeps playing even when the video is locked up, there is no buffering animation and mainly because it has about half of the episode buffered already.

As soon as the skipping starts happening I am unable to do anything in the app. I can’t go back to the menu, I can’t bring up the overlay menu on the bottom. The only thing I can do is repeatedly hit the back button for about 60 seconds till it finally goes back to the main menu.

This is only happening on my Shield. All my other devices are fine. I am hoping that a plex guru with way more knowledge than me can look at my logs gathered after my last “event” and tell me why it might be happening.

1st. I was told by another person who also had the title “plex ninja”, who said you can put media folders in the directory just not raw files. But apparently that “NINJA” was wrong. But after reading the info you supplied I understand that aspect much better now, so let’s move on.

2nd, and most important, unfortunately moving the files did didn’t fix my situation, it seems to be even worse now.

Please allow me to clarify the use of the “Plex” shared folder.

  1. DSM 5 & DSM 6 - Media is to be kept in separate shared folders.
  2. DSM 7 - Media is allowed in the Plex share because PMS itself is no longer stored there. The “Plex” shared folder is “just another shared folder” and can be used (or deleted) as you deem appropriate.

I wrote those messages because the single most common mistake is to have PMS scan /volume1/Plex to look for media files.

Doing this causes PMS to monitor itself which leads to never-ending scanning. It also consumes all the notification slots and prevents PMS from automatically detecting new media.

When all notification slots are used, the transcoder cannot convert any Dolby audio. The Dolby EasyAccessEncoder (EAE) requires two notify slots.

Would you please do the following for me?

  1. Stop Plex
  2. Start Plex
  3. Let it sit completely idle for 2 minutes. I would like to see the entire startup sequence.
  4. Download the logs ZIP file
  5. Attach that ZIP file here for me to examine.

As I suspected, you have more than 8192 (Linux default allocation) directories being monitored.

This is easy to correct.

Ok, so I did that and then I looked through the newest “Plex Media Server.log” after reboot and didn’t see that message so I hope that it worked, but I will let a professional look at the logs to make sure.

I restarted my Synology after running the task and even though I am sure that stopped and restarted Plex I still stopped and restarted it again once I was back in DSM just to be sure.

That still didn’t fix the issue. It still gets choppy and then locks up/restarts and I still cant use the back button of any other function while the choppy vid is happening.
