Choppy Video (But for only a few Videos)

I have a weird problem that i have not been able to solve. (sort of have but it just left me with more questions)

I’m just going to focus on one file with the understanding that it has happened to every episode of the season as well as another (strangely also a UK show) tv series.

Doctor.Who.2005.S13E05.1080p.HDTV.H264-UKTV.mkv

I’m trying to play this file on chromecast with my android phone with the plex app. my phone and chromecast both on wifi with well over 100Mbit connection.

For some reason the video file plays very choppy unless I change it to a lower quality in the plex app. At first i thought it was just to high of a bitrate and my connection was some how not enough… but then i looked at the bitrate of the video file and there should be no problems. I even play videos with way higher bitrate like The.Book.of.that.guy.from.the.wars.in.the.stars.S01E05.1080p.WEB.h264-KOGi.mkv. That plays no problem at all.

Then i thought that due to doctor who being in pal (25fps) there might be transcoding issues but The Book of… is in 24fps so that cant be it…

Then i figured it has to be the crhomecast… it just cant handle the some type of encoding that doctor who has.

So i went and replaced my gen 2 chromecast with a brand new chromecast with google tv. installed the apps and doctor who seems to play fine.

BUT!! when i try and cast it from my phone using the android plex app on my phone… the issue is still there! plays all choppy! :frowning:

So that means its something to do with my phone or the app. So whats up with that? anyone have any idea? I thought the app just passes all the data to the chromecast. I didn’t think anything was done on the phone or in the app other then redirecting.

Anyone have any idea what is going on?

What information is showing in the “now playing” tile for that playback on the Plex server dashboard when you play those Doctor Who episodes? I’m particularly interested in the track details and if/how/to-what they’re being transcoded.

It might also help if you can share the media details of one of those Doctor Who files (see `` > Get Info > View XML and copy content of the Media element)

I would not have thought for a minute that it could be trying to transcode the audio!!

anyone have any idea why its trying to transcode the audio when i’m using my phones plex app to cast (the the exact same chromecast) but not with the chromecast with google tv app?

and side question… why the heck is my computer having problems transcoding the audio of all things?? its only an amd fx6300 but i would think it should still be able to transcode it fine.

Different protocols have their own restrictions. The support for 6-channel AAC has improved a bit but it’s still not supported by a lot of clients – sometimes the choice of client and mode-of-transfer matter (same for their combination).

I don’t have a specific benchmark as for how much power is required to transcode certain audio formats.

is there a way to force no trancoding since the chromecast can run it as direct anyway?

Google removed support for multichannel AAC.

they removed support but it works on the chromecast with google tv when using the built in app but doesn’t work if i’m trying to cast it from my phone.

So anyone have any idea why it trans-codes when using the plex app on my phone but the app on the new chromecast with google tv doesn’t request it trans-coded?

same chromecast for both tests.

Same device
Different “mode of transportation” – while native playback on/over the device seems to be working for you, casting to it apparently doesn’t. That’s that Volts’ posted above.
