Server Version#:1.20.5.3600 Running on ubuntu
Player Version#:4.47.1
After the recent server update 1.20.5.3600 I can not play videos on my chromebook anymore(Chrome OS 76.0.3809.136). I use plex web to stream my media, but the player will not even open. I can see my libraries and all the content just unable to open the player. I have tried downgrading to previous server versions, disabling chrome extensions, clearing browser cache, incognito, and powerwashing(Fresh install chromeOS). It works fine on my win10 desktop(firefox&chrome) & android phone. I am completely stomped.
I’m on the same Chrome OS version (since my Chromebook is old and isn’t getting updates anymore) and I can confirm the exact same behavior you’re seeing. Nothing I’ve tried has made a difference so far, so I’m very interested to see if anyone else has found a fix. At least you now know it’s not just your machine, whether that’s a comfort or not.
I can confirm the same behavior on the older Chromebooks that still run version 76. No playback. The popup to choose resume or start from beginning doesn’t show up. No response to pressing the Play buttons anywhere in the web app.
I also have a newer Chromebook that is running the latest ChromeOS version (86…), and playback DOES work on the updated OS.
It may be time to run an alternate OS on my older Chromebooks in order to keep functionality.
Please fix this. Exact same issue. Older Chromebook that worked fine in browser until the update. Now clicking any of the play buttons doesn’t do anything. I have tried everything.
I just wanted to say that I have the exact same issue. Updated my server last week, and the old Chromebook was working fine until I closed the browser and then re-opened it, and now the player will not open. I can see my library, but I get no pop-up window to chose resume. I sure hope that there is a fix for this.
Sorry for not replying earlier. I ended up finding a workaround for my situation. Since I usually like to watch on my laptop at home I could watch from the local network and it played just fine. I saw with the console on chrome there are some errors appearing, I don’t have any idea how to decipher them though, but it seems the issue is something on Plex’s end. Article with workaround
It seems I’m having a similar issue with my Asus chromebox (M004U). A month or so ago I was suddenly no longer able to play anything. Similar to others I can see libraries, recently played items, etc.
I’ve checked if everything is up to date on my chromebox (it is) and I’ve tried clearing the various cache type stuff. I’m not sure what else to do here.
Same issue as well app.plex.tv stopped working a few months back on my ChromeBoxes (Asus CN60s, which haven’t gotten chrome OS updates for a while as the are EoL). Switching to connecting to my Plex server with its local IP worked for the last month or so, but tonight after an update of Plex server I can’t even play with that workaround. The interface loads, but video playback will not work, but works on all my other devices (Android, WinX, Rasplex, Apple-Web) in the house ok.
Plex has definitely changed or broken something on their end with updated to their product. Not a happy Plex Pass user.
I setup an SSH Tunnel on my home network so I can watch from any other networks. But, local network play still seems to be working for me. Maybe try tunneling and see if that fixes it, really makes you wish they had a webstore app
Same issue running PMS 1.21.1.3830 and accessing PMS dierctly or via plex.tv from an ASUS Chromebox M004U running Chrome OS version 76.0.3809.102.
I was happy to see that I can now cast Plex on my phone to my Chromebox. In the past, the Chromebox was not recognized as a valid casting device. This is really cool because controlling the Chromebox remotely is nice for parties and working around the barn.
Will post logs shortly.
Logs show following actions
Play a track from my iPhone, then cast to Chromebox. Appears that it makes the connection, but never plays anything. As stated in this thread, same behavior occurs if trying to play a Plex track using the Chrome browser directly on the Chromebox. Nothing happens when you click play. Logs don’t indicate any “red” errors.
PlexWebLogs2 contains events when attempting to play a track directly on the Chromebox.
My setup is way older than you guys – Chrome version 49.something on an old Windows XP laptop. Believe it or not, I could open the web player (plex.tv/desktop) and play content, up until … well, it feels like a year or more, but I’m not sure. I thought it was because maybe I had changed a crucial setting in Chrome one day – but I haven’t been able to find out the requirements for the player to work correctly in Chrome.
I was able to look at page behavior in the Inspector, and I see two syntax errors in the JavaScript code… One of them complains about the opening parenthesis in the expression “… =async( …”, and the other about one of the asterisks in the expression “2**e”, both of which pieces of code I assume “work fine” on other platforms. So, did JavaScript syntax, or the webpage code at Plex’s end, change at some point in the last year, so that outdated versions of Chrome don’t recognize some syntax they didn’t have to handle before?
Switching to cloudready has allowed me to stream on Plex again. This is on an Asus CN60 chromebox. I updated the firmware and after trying kodi (worked but I didn’t like it fire other reasons), ubuntu (buggy, crashed), I tried cloudready and it works similarly to my eol chromebox. So that’s what I’ve settled on for now.
Chrome Browser Version 76.0.3809, Needs fixing please Plex Techs? something wrong with the coding related to this version for Plex to play anything. I can navigate my server no problem there but as soon as I press the Play button nothing happens. A lot of Chromebooks are now stuck with this version of Chrome because update have stopped. I have two books on this version and have to play my music and films on my Serviio link on this browser.
My 69.0.0000 chrome browser version on another old Chromebook works perfectly? Do any of these problems get resolved by the Plex techs with proper answers to say (we fixed your Problem with Version 76.0.3809) or do we talk about it and think why bother with Plex. I’m just a bit Plexed myself because I just paid for lifetime and now nothing works as it used to before I paid.
I’m running a samsung chromebook on Version 75.0.3770.144 (Official Build) (32-bit).
It is awful to see Plex turn a blind eye to the situation like this. These devices work fine with disney + and netflix, but i can’t get it to run my kids cartoons i have on plex. Come on guys, please keep the tech alive.
