Chromecast w/ Google TV ASS subtitles impair playback

On Chromecast w/ Google TV, if I try to turn on the subtitles of videos that have embedded subtitles (indicated as ‘ASS’), the playback takes forever to start, if at all. Switching during playback will stop the playback usually. If I use the UI to fetch an SRT file, the subtitles and playback are usually fine.

I’m having this issue too, it used to play fine (as far as I recall), but an update a while ago broke it.
