Chromecast with Google TV - An error occurred while attempting to play this video check the connection and try again

Server Version#: 1.23.5.4841-549599676 (Ubuntu Server 20.04 LTS)
Player Version#: 8.20.0.26605 (Chromecast with Google TV)

Hi, have a problem with playing TV shows for about 2 weeks. Tried to restart server, chromecast.
Trying to watch The Big Bang Theory. In chromecast it won’t start. It works fine in Samsung Galaxy S20, computer (web player), playstation 4, Samsung TV.

If I start to watch TV show ie in mobile, then want to resume watching in chromecast, it works fine. But if I want to start watch it again, it shows me error only.

All media content is stored in Synology NAS which is mounted to Ubuntu server.

Chromecast IP: 10.31.0.35
Server IP: 10.31.0.52
Synology IP: 10.31.0.2

Logs deleted after fix.

Any fix?
Thank you

bump.

No fix?

Here’s some things to try. They have helped others.

  1. Force stop the app, clear data, re-launch, re-login (or delete & re-install, whichever is easier).

  2. Change Plex server & Chromecast to a public DNS, such as Google, 8.8.8.8. Restart Plex Media Server, restart Chromecast.

  3. Disable secure communications on Plex server and Android TV app.

  • Plex Media Server: Settings → Network → Secure Connections = Disabled.
  • Android TV app: Settings → Advanced → Allow Insecure Connections = Always

Note: You will lose Plex Web access via app.plex.tv, which uses https, when you disable secure communications. You will have to connect to your Plex server via http://pms_ip_address:32400/web (ex: http://192.168.1.2:32400/web). Also, Plex Relay will also no longer work.

Same issue for me, but I have no issues on a second google chromecast with google tv or a roku playing the same content on the same network. I’m not finding any settings differences.

Didn’t help it. There was news update of plex server. After updated plex everything works fine again.

I to am having the same issue with my Google Chromecast except with any new content i have added to my library within the last 3-4 weeks if i attempt to play anything that is older then 35-40 days it has no issues

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the App and server and using an AS5202T NAS
Turned NORDVPN on and Off on the NAS as well as the router, also disabled secure connection.
As well if it try to play the file a 2nd time is causes the chromecast to reboot itself

I have the latest Version 1.23.5.4862 for my server and on 8.20 on the chromecast

@miggiess

Yours seems like a different problem, as the one here affected all content.

You might try changing your DNS to use 8.8.8.8, Google’s public DNS, then restarting your NAS.

If that does not help, open a new thread in the Asutor area of the forum: Topics tagged server-asustor. Tag it server-asutor and android-tv.

Definitely leave the VPN disabled while testing. VPNs can cause problems for Plex. Leaving it disabled is one less variable you have to take into account while troubleshooting.

Thanks for the information sir, i have opened a thread., i will keep my eye on this thread as well should others report the same issue with not being able to play newly added content

I’ve been having this issue as well and it’s driving me mad. Playback works fine on everything except the Chromecast with Google TV. I even bought a ethernet adapter for the Chromecast to eliminate network issues, but despite getting 70 down from the internet I can’t get Plex to work. (Plex is local, but if I get 70 from the internet, the connection to my router is at least 70, and the NAS is plugged directly into the router)

I migrated my Plex server from the Synology app store package to Docker, this fixed it temporarily, but the next morning the problem had returned. (Still fine on everything but the Chromecast) Same experience after a reboot of the NAS to upgrade the firmware. Still, I don’t think the issue is the NAS as playback is perfect on every other device.

Manually setting the quality to 720p 3mbps allows the content to play somehow, if you can get through the menus before the error pops up. But, with the Chromecast wired I should be getting close to 100mbps to the NAS. Playback at 4k is fine on everything else. A sub 5mbps playback limit makes no sense.

Player version 8.24.1.28493

Any updates on this? I tried all the suggestions, and certain shows play no problem but others do not.

For me the problem seems to have fixed itself. In the mean time my Chromecast has updated to player version 8.25.1.28703, perhaps this is related.

My server version also updated, though I can’t quickly find the version number.

In case anyone comes across this thread looking for another answer, what fixed it for me was making sure that the sound format of my Chromecast, which is found under "Display & Sound → Advanced Sound Settings → Format was set to “Automatic”. I had it set to “manual” to try and fix an issue I was having with the HBOMax and AppleTV apps not having sound, and it turns out that Plex references this setting during playback. (BTW - if anyone has issues with those apps on the Chromecast with Google TV, I find that changing the HDMI source once or twice, and then switching back fixes that problem).

I also seem to have found a fix for the subtitle issue I was facing as well. If you set it to always burn the subtitles they will display fine, without the endless loading issue you might otherwise experience. I get the impression from the CPU usage on the NAS that setting it to “burn” does the rendering of the subtitles on the NAS instead of the Chromecast. Seems the Chromecast is unable to render subtitles locally for some reason, but can of course take the video stream from the NAS after the subtitles are rendered in by the NAS.

Salut.
Merci, merci, merci !!
