Chromecast with Google TV some AAC5.1 sound issue

Server Version#:1.21.2.3939
Player Version#:8.12.1.22702

I am having issues with playback of AAC5.1 content through PLEX on Chromecast with Google TV. It also appears some AAC5.1 plays fine while some don’t. Some movies which played perfectly fine a few weeks ago suddenly stopped working. So it could be due to an issue caused by updates.

Google TV is directly connected directly to Sound Bar (LG SN10YG) which supports all of those audio formats, then video is passed through ARC.

  1. when Passthrough set to: HDMI - AAC5.1 will sometimes not play at all or sometimes play but pops and cracks.
  2. Temporary work around i found is change passthrough to optical and select AC3. This forces conversion of AAC5.1 to AC3 (audio fixed), however, I can’t keep it in this mode if I want to play atmos content. So i have to switch back and forth depending on the content I want to watch.

I have checked the google tv sound settings switching between auto and manual (force unsupported aac “ON” or “OFF”, it made no difference. If i play the same file through VLC (via network file access) the AAC5.1 plays fine. I’m just wondering if this is an known issue, and if anyone figured out an long term fix, oh is an update on the way.

Update - Downgrading the Plex TV app to 8.11.xxxxx fixed this issue. Not sure if future updates will fix this.

This is fixed for me in 8.12.3.22809
