On ~2022/11/24, I was using the Plex app for Chromecast with Google TV model GZRNL and I noticed that something had updated because navigating the UI started to make noises again and, ever since, I’ve been unable to play any videos that need to be transcoded due to error “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.”
On the server side, the following logs seem to be consistent:
“Nov 22, 2022 19:20:39.201 [20068] INFO - [Req#185/Transcode] [FFMPEG] - MFT name: ‘Microsoft AAC Audio Encoder MFT’

(Weirdly, folder “C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server” seems to not exist - “C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Plex” does).
Playing the same video files on other devices that do support the EAC3 codec (iPhone, web app, etc) works fine.
Upgrading from version 1.29.1.6316 to version 1.30.0.6406 (latest as of writing) hasn’t made a difference.
The server’s transcoder settings are as follows (mostly default from what I can remember):
- Transcoder quality: Automatic
- Transcoder temporary directory:
- Transcoder default throttle buffer: 60
- Background transcoding x264 preset: Very fast
- Enable HDR tone mapping: Ticked
- Disable video stream transcoding: Unticked
- Use hardware acceleration when available: Unticked
- Use hardware-accelerated video encoding: Ticked
- Maximum simultaneous video transcode: Unlimited
I noticed that, in folder “C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server\Resources\Profiles”, a lot of the files - including “Chromecast.xml” were modified on 2022/11/14 which is roughly the right timeframe, but this is odd because I manually update Plex and I last did so on 2022/10/22.
Can anyone help? Thanks.
