Closed Captions are not on at start up of Mac Player

Server Version#: 1.29.1.6241
Player Version#: 1.55.0.327
Every TV show I record has the subtitle option shown as Unknown (Closed Captions) when I play it back.

Every TV show I try to watch in my MAC PLAYER does NOT have Closed Captions start up by default, in spite of that setting… I have to set it to none, get out of the setting panel, and then go back in again and set it back to Unknown(Closed Captions. THEN I see them.

Every TV show I watch via the WEB PLAYER works fine. Closed captions are on by default when I start the show. What is the difference?

Hello.

  • Describe how you record a TV show.
  • The one you pictured with Unknown (Closed Captions), copy the xml info for that video please, and paste it into a code block </> in your reply.
  • Have a read through Using Subtitles

If you can’t solve it, reboot and gather server and player log files after demonstrating the problem.

Couldn’t get out of the code block. Here’s what the settings show:

Also, do you mean reboot the server or the computer I’m using before getting the server/player log files. Thanks, I really appreciate your reply.

Thanks for the file info. I searched the forums for eia_608, and found that people have posted questions like yours before. It sounds like the that format subtitle requires the video to be transcoded to burn in the subs, but it looks from the screenshot that it’s direct playing.

Have you tried to change the setting Prefer non-SDH subtitles?
Maybe I’m missing something, but I thought you’re trying to display SDH subtitles.

(yes I meant power cycle any hardware involved)

I prefer plain closed captions, and do have Prefer non-SDH subtitles checked. The problem is that the web and the player react differently to playing the video. the web automatically shows CC and you have to turn them off if you want them. The same setting in the app (Mac at least) shows NO CC by default, even though they are turned on. You have to turn them off and then back on again to see them. I’ll have to download a windows version to my Mac Parallels program and see what happens. I’ll report back.

OK, so the score is 2 to 1. Mac client and PC client need to have CC turned off and then back on. Web has them on by default. Check out this video

i can see it happen. Logs will help

OK here are 2 logs. I did the procedure shown in the video again at 22:13-22:14 EDT.

Plex Server Log.zip (4.4 MB)

Thanks!

Hey I might have found what’s happening in your Plex.log

Burn level: never gets sets somehow, but your subs are picture based and have to be burned afaik.

Problem is I can’t find the setting to adjust that in Plex for Mac. The setting exists on iOS and in the hosted web app, though.

https://support.plex.tv/articles/200289408-plex-web-app-settings/

I supposed you can force transcoding by messing with the player’s direct play or direct stream settings, but that would affect every playback which is not optimal.

@OttoKerner would you offer some guidance on Live TV closed caption subtitle playback being overridden by a never setting we can’t locate? Thank you sir.

SUPER! Thanks so much for your great detective work and follow through! Hopefully the Plex folks can solve this!

@BigWheel You’ve been kind enough to help me in the past… can you help me, or forward this to someone who can? Thanks.

@chris_decker08 How to I get someone from Plex to help me with this?

No one from Plex can help me??

@OttoKerner @BigWheel @chris_decker08 @Moussa
How do I get help from Plex for this problem???

sorry for losing track of this. thanks @nibbles for investigating.

@nibbles @BigWheel Will there be any way for me to know this has been resolved other than reading the server and player updates and hoping I recognize the description of my problem?

Thanks for keeping your issue active. I don’t have any inside info, but BigWheel might notice your ping and tell us if it’s there’s progress.

Sorry I don’t have an ETA. There is recent activity in the bug report for this and looks like they are trying to figure out the best way tackle

At least it’s being looked at. That’s most of the battle. Thanks for the update. Any way I can be kept in the loop?
