I am rather hard of hearing, so having the closed captions on TV broadcasts is very helpful. Unfortunately, when I record a TV show to watch later, I can seldom get the closed captions to work. I try turning them on and sometimes they will work for a while, and then quit. And sometimes I can’t get them on at all. My Plex server is a new M4 Mac Mini (MacOS 26.1 Tahoe), with the video files residing on my Synology 218+ NAS. I am connected to the NAS via SMB. Everything else in the system works fine. Text subtitles that I add to movies work just fine. It’s only the closed caption from recorded off-the-air TV programs that either don’t show or cause problems with the program if they do show. The Mac Mini should have plenty of horsepower to handle the transcoding, so I’m stumped.
To make this even more frustrating, when I am camping, I connect to my home network via cellular and then cast the recorded TV show from my Plex server at home to the TV in the camper. And there the subtitles work just fine. It’s only in my home network (last measured connection speed 460 MBps down and 10.4 MBps up) that I have the problem.
I have tried everything I know, including deleting and re-installing the Plex app. It’s only closed captions on the Plex app that are the problem, On other streaming services, the closed captions/subtitles (which ever) work just fine. Any assistance you can give me will be greatly appreciated.
