Codec for mkv files?

Hi folks, I have just started seeing an error regarding missing codecs when I try to play mkv files. I had to reinstall my computer a while back. I’m not sure whether the problem started at that point or afterwards but it is now refusing to play files that once worked fine. I don’t remember ever having to install codecs previously… does anyone have any recommendations or have seen this happen before? Thanks!

mkv is a container not a codec.

Yes good point. But it’s still just mkv files that have the problem…

OK I have found out the codec for one of the affected files is MPEG-H Part2/HVEC (H.265) (hvec). The audio is AAC (mp4a). The error doesn’t say which codec is missing so I have no idea if it’s the audio, video or both.

Doesn’t Plex try and download its own codecs? Is there a way I can flush the cache? Thanks!

what server version?

Server version 2.13.0, thanks

That’s not the server version. The latest Plex Pass release is 1.7.1. Please log into your server and verify what version you have installed.

Apologies, I was looking at the web tab. Server version is 1.4.2.3400 - so I guess I need to update to 1.5.1? When I click “Check for updates” it says “up to date”… that was the first thing I tried!

If you want the latest public release, I recommend going to the downloads section of this website and downloading it and installing it manually. I think it’s 1.5.5.
