Conversion failed. A required codec could not be found or failed to install

Server Version#: 1.4.2.3400
Plex Media Server Logs_2019-10-05_12-21-16.zip (4.0 MB)
Player Version#: 2.13.0

Hi. 5 days ago the Web Player App and Fire TV App stopped playing .MKV files with the infamous message:

" Conversion failed. A required codec could not be found or failed to install."

Ironically though, my Apple 4kTV has no problem playing those exact MKV files. What gives? I’ve attached the server logs.

Looks like a bit of DB corruption today sir, and a 404 when your system tried to get the HEVC codec. You might also check if you or your ISP instigated some sort of double NAT.

On High Sierra, I’ve had PMS-1.15 thru 1.18 working well. May I ask how you decided to pin the version you’re running at 1.4.3? Just curious.

As far as the SQLITE3 errors in that one db, you can investigate as this article shows:

And the HTTP 404 response, Not Found, the browser was able to communicate with plex.tv, but the server could not find what was requested.

Other than that, how’s your day?

Thanks Nibbles. I did a disk repair and it found nothing wrong and also followed the link you provided. Didn’t appear to be any problems but I ran the repair anyway. No change.

When you say “Pin the version you’re running at at 1.4.3” What do you mean?

Why would those same MKV files play on the Apple 4K TV Plex with no issues? Theoretically, speaking wouldn’t Plex search for the same codecs? Hmmm

To pin a software version is to not update it to a newer version each time one is released, choosing instead to hold off because the current version works for you.

This is common when it comes to firmware. Unless the new firmware solves a bug you have, it’s not the best idea to update it.

So I was asking why you stopped updating Plex Media Server at version 1.4.3, when we are up to 1.17.0 these days approximately.

Each player has it’s own codec store. They might already have one from a month or two ago. The server itself has it’s own codec store in case it needs to encode or decode something. Playing on an ATV4K is almost always Direct Play for the server. Playing on the web app requires the server to send something a browser can handle.

Guess what? I did a complete reinstall and everything worked.

And to your point, Plex was never updating. I didn’t pin it on purpose. For some reason, even though I would check for updates, it would say updated but didn’t. After the reinstall and renaming of my server, I could see the old one “pinned” at 1.4.

All of the media plays just fine. I have to figure if my Nord VPN or Malwarebytes is preventing/blocking access to the Plex update server.

In any event, thanks for taking the time to answer. I appreciate it!
