Collections broken/Missing from Episodes

I was using this feature to setup playlists with various shows sorted by episode air date. I don’t know of any other way to achieve this. As of the last couple of updates the Collections tag is missing from episodes.

In fact Collections have been rendered useless as not only can I not use them to filter episodes, but all play options, including random, report a playback error. I assume it’s because it can’t find episodes associated with the Collection, even though it sees the shows.

The only way in which it still works is filtering tv shows by collection and hitting play/random on the menu bar on the top right.

I checked through the Plex Media Player and browser, exactly the same.

Episodes were never assignable to collections.
Only a tv show as a whole can be added to a collection.

I know for certain that previously I could go to Library, view by Episodes and then filter by Collection, thus showing all/only the episodes that belonged to that collection. This doesn’t work anymore… now the filter returns no matches.

I see. That appears to be a bug in the web app.

Try this:
instead of Filter - Collection, pick Filter - Custom Filter
then pick ‘Show Collection’ ‘is’ ‘[search term]’
‘Apply’

Your suggestion works, thank you.

I hope the previous functionality is restored, as it is more efficient.

Also, it’s not just the web app, it’s also the media player and Plex for Windows.

I came here looking for this - definitely a new bug breaking functionality that I’ve used for literally years to build smart playlists of unwatched episodes across multiple series, sorted by Air Date… and syncing based upon the resulting smart playlist. At some point in the past several weeks I noticed that a ton of space had freed up on my device, and traced it to my smart playlists suddenly being empty due to something changing here. Is this bug reported and being tracked somewhere? I forget how to check, it’s been so long since the last bug I was watching…

Edit your smart playlists and replace “Collection” with “Show Collection”.

Already done through a Custom Filter thanks to the suggestion above… but I’m going to look to see if that’s an option in the standard filtering… any reason for that particular change, bifurcating the Collections? or is it to improve the handling of collections that contain both Movies and TV Shows maybe? Anyway, thanks!

The quickfilters are supposed to only show filters which are available for the current library view mode.
i.e. if you have the “Show” view mode activated, you will only see quickfilters which deal with show-level attributes.
If you have the “Episodes” view mode activated, you should only see quickfilters which deal with Episode-level attributes.

Since Plex doesn’t store Collection per episode, but only per Show, it is only consequent that a quickfilter for Collection is not gonna work.

That it still displays this quickfilter at the episode level is a bug, which will be squashed, eventually.

That makes sense - it would also make sense that the Show Collection quickfilter surfaces in its place, right?

Yes, absolutely.

The bug that’s still an issue re.: Collections is that the play/shuffle buttons don’t work anymore: clicking on those buttons for a Collection anywhere (Library, Collections, a Collection’s page) returns a playback error… unless it’s just me, and then I’ve no idea why…

if i recall that was a bug but i thought that was fixed. It is working for me in 1.21.2.3943

I have the same version but also have the issue. :man_shrugging:

have you tried the hosted app.plex.tv vs local IP:32400/web ?

Not before… did just now, same issue.

ok. Not sure why it worked for me before it just failed for me when i tried again.
