Collections in 2 movie libraries

Server Version#: 1.20.3.3483

I have added more drive space to my system and moved 1080p movies to one library and 4k to a new library. The original Movies library (with the 1080p movies) utilizes Collections, but I cannot get the new 4k library to create collections. In addition the original Movies library collections is still showing all collections but the 4k movie collections links are broken or the tile is blank.

Before I delete the 4k collections and the blank tiles, is there an issue with Collections?

Is the collection tag auto complete broken?

and example:

I had Ant-Man 1 & 2 in my movie collection with a Collections tag of Ant-Man. Both are 4k so they were moved to the new 4k library. When the system scanned the 4k library it added both movies but did not create a collection and the collections tag is blank.
While in the Movies library, the Ant-Man collection still resides but does nothing as the files are not in the Movie library.

Am I going to have to do this all manually?

When I go into the 4k library and edit, under advanced, the Minimum automatic collection size is 2.

Thanks.

Movies don’t get moved. They are removed from one library and added to the other. All previous information is lost such as collection information. You will need to recreate the collection.

In a normal instance, you are correct. But in my case, I stated that I added a new drive and the new library is on the new drive so the files themselves were actually moved from one drive space to another, creating a new entry in the database and removing the old entry.

Doesn’t matter if it’s different drives or the same drive. If you move content from 1 library to another, the information is not carried over.

Understood. But if having the “create collection on minimum” is set to 2, I was under the impression the collection is done automatically. I did go in and set one set of movies manually with a collection tab in the 4k library, but in the home screen when I go into the 4k library at the top I have Recommended and Library. the Collection is not there.

No. That setting is for when to show collections. Setting a 2 means, the collection is only shown if there are 2 or more movies with that collection name. If you see that setting, then you are using the new Plex Movie agent. This does not automatically gather collection information. That is only done if your library is using the TheMovieDB agent. There is a setting when using that agent to automatically get the collection info from them.

Thanks. So it was the agent attached to the library. As soon as I changed it from Plex to The Movie DB, it rescanned and started showing collections.

For anyone else the fix is to go into Settings / Manage / Libraries / [your library name] / Edit / Advanced
scroll down the the bottom and set Collections and make sure the Agent is The Movie Database then below that check the options you want. Then Save.

I believe there might be some confusion.
If you create a new library (or update an existing) one to the new Plex Movie scanner/agent, Plex will indeed automatically create collections. You can set a threshold for the minimum amount of movies of a collection you want to have before Plex creates a collection entry.
While The Movie Database agent basically just tags the movies (if configured to automatically get collection information from The Movie Database), the new Plex Movie agent will also get posters, backdrops and the description.

There’s however a caveat when it comes to updating an existing library.
When updating your library from the legacy Plex Movie agent, Plex will not overwrite manually populated collection tags. If you want Plex to create those collections automatically with that agent, you might need to delete/clear existing collection tags and ensure their collection tag isn’t locked.

Where did all these extra collections come from? I didn’t add them.

There are three ways “automatic” collections can be made.

  1. You may have enabled the Use collection info from The Movie Database metadata agent setting. When enabled (it is disabled by default), that will try to gather collection information from The Movie Database. This may cause many unwanted collections to be automatically created, particularly collections where you only have one item. You can disable that preference in the server metadata agent settings for the “Plex Movie” and “The Movie Database” metadata agents. This will only prevent collections from getting automatically added to items added to your library in the future . It will not remove collections from existing library items.
  2. If you are using Plex Media Server 1.20 or above and are using the Plex Movie agent you can set how many items minimum to create a collection. You can set it to Disabled if you do not want it to automatically create collections.
  3. If you have MP4s with an embedded “Album” tag, the Local Media Assets agent may pick it up as a collection. Be aware the Local Media agent also picks up external subtitles, extras, and other embedded metadata in MP4s (and other files), so be aware of this if you choose to disable the agent source.
