Collections will not play on some players

Server Version#: 1.21.1.3830
Player Version#: 4.47.3

I don’t think I’ve posted a bug report here before, so bear with me if I miss some info (and let me know, happy to provide anything extra). In particular, I think the version numbers I have above are correct, but please let me know if not.

I’ve noticed a problem with playing content from collections in the last week or so - this happens on the Web app player and also Android based players (a Samsung tablet, NVIDIA Shield). These same collections play normally on other players in our house (eg. iPad, Xbox).

ETA: What I actually see when attempting to play is that in the web app, it gives a “Playback Error: An error occurred loading items to play.” message. On the Android/Shield, it just sits attempting to load the first item indefinitely. It may eventually time out, but generally, I haven’t waited long enough for it to do that.

I’ve obtained the logging and there does seem to be some difference between the POST request to play the content from the Web app player and another player that works (in this case iPad). I’ve attached logs and you can see one attempt to play on both devices - Jan 6, 13:28:32.695 for the Web app, and Jan 6, 13:29:12.174 for the iPad. The URL to (what I assume is) generating the PlayQueue looks slightly different between the two devices, and results in 0 IDs for the Web app, but 849 IDs for the iPad, which would probably explain the problem.

ETA: I haven’t included logging for a mobile device, but if it turns out to be a different cause, I can do this. It’s just that the web app and iPad were the easiest devices for me to use for debugging.

As I said, let me know if you require anything further, but hopefully it’s a simple fix.

Your trying to play an entire collection? From a movie library?

It’s kids TV shows. So yes, I’m trying to shuffle the shows for my kids, so that we as the parents don’t need to watch the same episodes over and over.

I can confirm this. For TV shows, you can’t “Play” from a Collection, or you get an error. (Movies work.)

In Plex.app for Mac:

@kyt977, you can use a Playlist for the same sanity-preserving, repeat-avoiding purpose. Plus you can remove the episodes that you really don’t like.

Thanks for report. I can reproduce as well in the web app.

We used to. But we regularly get new episodes of the shows which my kids then want to watch, so collections seemed like an easier way to manage it, as I could just tag the show and then it ends up in the right collections (I have our whole library sliced a few different ways for different purposes).

You can create a smart playlist based on being filtered on the tags or collection tags you used and any new things with tag will be automatically added to playlist.

Hopefully this can be fixed quickly though

Yeah, I think I did originally start out that way, but then I realised collections let me shuffle which is all I wanted to do, so I didn’t worry about the smart playlists. That’s a good workaround for the time being though, thanks!

Just realized you can filter on the collection in the regular library and that works. just the collection view itself does not it seems.

And I can’t create playlists from my collections either. Strange that is just affects TV shows. Hope there is a fix soon.

Also seems to work fine on iPads.

Can I ask if this is on a list to get fixed. I have so many collections where I use the shuffle and the work around is not ideal.

This should be fixed I thought. It is working for me now in current server 1.21.2.3943

never mind was thinking of something else.

No problem - it would be great to know if this is on a list to be fixed? I am running version 1.21.2.3997 and the shuffling problem is still there.

I can’t make promises about order which bugs will get worked on first but I am trying to push for it.

I’ll add myself to the list of people who’d like to see this fixed. This problem does not seem to affect movie collections though, only TV.

Thank you - I appreciate there are probably lots of things being worked on.

This has been a thorn in my side.

I’ve installed PMS on Ubuntu, Debian, Windows 7, 10, 2012, 2019. Old versions new versions.

Tested different folder structures. Whether it be my Anime folder, or my TV folder, if Plex thinks its a TV Show then it can’t play or shuffle collections on a windows PC.

Other devices work, Samsung, fire TV, PS4 but PC cannot play or shuffle colections.

Not a Database issue, or a folder issue, this is a Plex end issue and I’d really love to see it fixed. Love plex to death!

Completely agree - for some reason collections on Apple TV will shuffle just not on Android/PC. This was a feature I used a lot and can’t wait to have it back!

I just want to say thank you for fixing this issue - I updated to the latest version on my server and it now shuffles.

Thank you again!
