Color space is not supported error after updating to 1.25.5

Interestingly enough, this guy:

  • Codec HEVC
  • Bitrate 4278 kbps
  • Bit Depth 10
  • Chroma Location left
  • Chroma Subsampling 4:2:0
  • Coded Height 1608
  • Coded Width 3840
  • Color Primaries bt709
  • Color Range tv
  • Color Space bt709
  • Color Trc bt709
  • Frame Rate 23.976 fps
  • Height 1604
  • Level 5.0
  • Profile main 10
  • Ref Frames 1
  • Width 3840
  • Display Title 4K (HEVC Main 10)
  • Extended Display Title 4K (HEVC Main 10)

Played fine, but was transcoded (hardware) to x264. It should play natively (and thus be direct streamed) on my AppleTV. So something weird definitely seems to be going on, at least in my setup
but the end result is I get that weird Color Space error and stuff doesn’t play.

If non-DV videos are also being transcoded, DV is definitely going to fail.

Share TV app and server logs if you like.

Thanks, yea, it was weird. I have no idea what kind of state my aTV got into, but it was doing other weird stuff, too. Like, the streams to that aTV showed as 10Gbs, and everything was transcoding (even 1080p h264). Since I was upgrading to tvOS 15.6 I went ahead and just completely factory reset it and now it all works as expected. DoVi direct plays fine as does all the other formats I’ve tried. Super weird, but I appreciate your help

Apologies, I read much of the discussion but couldn’t quite understand all of it. I also read Plex displays wrong colours with Dolby Vision on AppleTV 4k - #312 by Ridley but it seems to be carefully worded and I don’t quite understand either. So hopefully someone could help provide an interpretation for lay people

I have a file like this, which is presumably one of those DolbyVision 5 files with the problem. This file is FHD, so I can’t even avoid 4K files as a workaround.

On Plex web player, I get the dreaded “File is unplayable. Color space is not supported” error. Am I correct in thinking that Plex web player will never be able to support such files? At least, unless the licensing issues are unlocked since web browsers won’t provide support for Dolby Vision on their own
(I wonder how official streaming services handle this in their web apps, but that’s another question altogether)

On the native Plex app for Windows, I am able to direct play the file, but the colors are all wrong. I have tried enabling and disabling HDR tone mapping on the server, and I don’t see further settings on the client. Do I need a HDR monitor for the colors to display properly, or will this also never work?

Is there anything I can do on my end? For example, is there a Linux script to detect such files and convert them to files that work?

Also, does rolling back to an older Plex server help with the incorrect colors on Windows? I thought it wouldn’t, since the file is already being direct play’d.

Plex Web depends on the browser you are using. If it can support HEVC, it should direct play the file with bad colors just like the Plex for Windows.

On Plex for Windows, if you don’t have an HDR monitor, then yes, it will look bad too.

Only bother with DV Profile 5 video on playback devices that support it.

This is like complaining to the police that a stolen TV didn’t come with a remote.

They don’t support DV in web apps at all.
They don’t even support DV in standalone Mac or PC player apps.

No.

I have the same issue, start lately, probably after an update. I am running Plex Server on Ubunto 20.4.4

This issue just started happening on all LG WebOS TV’s with the plex client update on 7/26/2022. All DV files were playing perfectly fine before this update, now they all say “Color Space Not Supported”. The Plex media server was not updated, rolling back the media server to the versions in this thread made no difference.

Confirmed by multiple users on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/svzgwd/comment/iht2d58/?sort=new

Is this an expected change or is something broken?

@apocalypse_cow We recently found a bug where the Plex for LG app was detecting DV incorrectly. A fix has been released. Please check that the app is updated to 5.43.2 and see if the issue persist.

Is there a plan to fix the same issue on Android TV (Sony) and Samsung TV?

The issue on the LG is specific to the LG. Other Plex clients should already be able to play DV5, but with bad coloring. This was a PMS bug at one point but fixed with PMS 1.27.2.5929.

If you are still getting the “Color space is not supported” error, please provide details and logs.

Hi

The problem only happens on my Samsung Smart TV and on my web browser.

Here are some more information:

Samsung Smart TV app information:

File Information:

Plex Web Version: 4.84.1

Plex Server Version: 1.28.0.5998

@hysel

If you are getting the “Color space is not supported” error, please provide details, and logs. For the Samsung app you need to enable logging to server ( it is in Settings> Advanced) in the app, reproduce then get server logs.

Here are the log files you requested:

Plex Media Server Logs_2022-07-28_21-10-46.zip (942.4 KB)

@hysel can you please disable “verbose” logging save the setting then restart your server and try again. (only “debug” logging should be enabled)

There you go
Plex Media Server Logs_2022-07-28_22-46-42.zip (966.6 KB)

Hi @BigWheel
The same issue (color space is not supported) just appeared on my devices. Thought it to be a problem with the LG OLED G7, but it is on mobile and web apps too. Update to 1.28.0.5999-97678ded3 did not work. Uninstall and rollback to 1.24/1.25/1.26 and 1.27.2.5929 did not help either. DV files were watchable a few days ago but are not anymore, same files that have been watched now generate an error. Non-DV Files work fine. Thanks for your help!

@marcelstonz that error is expected with DV P5 if any transcoding is required.

So it’s very likely with Plex Web, because HEVC will usually (except in Safari) require transcoding.

With other devices, let’s look at standard troubleshooting. Make sure quality is set to max/original. Make sure subtitles are disabled. Enable Debug, disable Verbose, reproduce the problem, and share server logs and client logs and media info for the affected files.

Hello,

Sorry if it has been asked. Is it possible Infuse has this license then ? Because each time I download a release with DV, I cannot watch it with Plex-client but I can with Infuse. (AppleTV4k).

By the way, it seems I can now play some video files I couldn’t before, with the last update and probably this fix:

  • Dolby Vision Profile 5 video playback did not work correctly (fix also requires Plex Media Server update to at least 1.27.2.5929)

But I still have to perform some test to find out how it solved my problems.

Possibly, I don’t know.

The fix in client and server had to do with remuxing, not a transcode.

We are still making some changes to improve the remux and the info that is sent to TV in stream
