My parents who barely know how to turn on a computer are calling to complain that I injected ads in my movies and they are basically yelling at me. I explained to them that this is an update that Plex did and it’s on by default and they have to turn it off but they don’t understand!
Why is this crap being forced on everyone especially my parents who don’t really understand what is going on in the first place???
I can’t even tell them how to turn it off because they get confused and give up on it. They don’t know what movies are mine and what are on the Plex free list. They say it all comes up in a the same list. My movies and Plex movies.
This needs to be turned off by default or at least a prompt when you start Plex asking if you want it on or off.
If your parents are going to yell at you over something as trivial as free movies that contain ads, you have bigger problems than plex’s default settings.
It’s being added to everyone’s service because it’s another revenue stream. What’s going on is, they struck a deal with several major motion picture companies that have agreed to ad-supported content within Plex, free of charge, you should explain that to them, so that they understand.
Then be a good son and go over there, or ask a neighbor to swing by with you on the phone.
As an additional revenue stream, this is an unlikely outcome and is not in the best interest of Plex or it’s newly acquired content providers.
I’m just being real. You come on here complaining about something so insignificant, that can be turned off with relative ease, and want us to feel bad for you because your parents are yelling at you. Perhaps you shouldn’t attempt to elicit sympathy in your post or call useable features crap. And if they are indeed yelling at you, I stand by my statement, you have bigger problems than plex’s default settings. I also did say to contact a neighbor or someone who could help them and be on the phone with that person to walk them through it precisely because I know what it’s like to live far away from your parents, I live closer to 4,000 miles away from mine
Also, I am not on their payroll, I just hate it when people, such as yourself, come in here and talk a bunch of crap rather than just say “Hey, this is my problem, can someone help fix it?” Or “Hey plex, this is my problem, here’s a feature suggestion”. It’s so much easier than:
That’s all a rather aggressive tone, and it doesn’t change or help your situation any. This isn’t a “vent your frustrations” forum, it’s a support forum, where people are here, mostly donating their time, to help out. You’ll get more flies with honey man.
You’re wrong there too… I don’t think they could pay me enough to work for them… Again, I am just telling you to drop the attitude and constructively ask for help, rather than come in and moan about something that this post isn’t going to change…
Ye know, the free movies Plex has added doesn’t interfere with my parents ability to continue to stream from me. They don’t get annoying pop ups or adds. There’s just a section on the dashboard they can select IF they decide they wanna watch those movies. They way you’re talking, your parents probably complain about YouTube. I suggest you go make aggressive posts to Google about them having adds on Youtube.
Quick question. If this is per account, then why doesn’t he just log into the parents account via their email and password he set up for them and turn the VOD feature off for them. When they turn their devices on again, they then shouldn’t see movies and tv showing up anymore.
I’m not sure why you think you have to “moderate” this post. You say you don’t work for Plex and don’t want to work for Plex. A simple pop up when this feature was new would have solved everything. Do you want this or not. Instead they hide it in the settings which I don’t even think the Amazon Fire Stick you can get to this setting. My dad said he looked at every setting and couldn’t find it. I know you can do it on the webpage.
shrugs I don’t see a setting in the account settings (to be fair I haven’t looked much)… I just had to unpin it from my side bar on my firestick and my android tv… but it’s still showing on my phone cause I haven’t taken the steps to remove it from there yet (I do very little plex watching on my phone)
nothing is aggressive about this. should have seen the plex reddit forum when this came out. all the people angry that it was default on. That was aggressive.
Guess I’m showing my age. Years ago, there was a joke going around that arguing via the internet was the same as competing in the special olympics. Overall, the joke really isn’t funny, but it shows your lack of intelligence.
Regardless of all of that, it doesn’t matter. You either lack the intelligence or simply don’t care. In the opening post, you made at least 3 comments in an aggressive tone instead of just simply asking if anyone had found a way to disable that feature. Next time you ask for help, word things better and lots of frustration on your part can be avoided.
Joe, all weird special olympic jokes aside. Your post was full of piss and vinegar from a readers perspective. I am not trying to moderate these forums, so much as I am telling you to drop all the nonsense and clearly state your problem and objective, so that you might actually get the help you desire. Do you think if you were to walk up to a cop and say “Hey pig, someone just robbed my house” that they’re going to put much stock in helping you? Sure, they may help just because they actually have to and can be held accountable if they don’t, but you’re not going to get their best effort. Now picture that scenario in a forum setting. Where a team member or moderator can choose to reply/help. It’s futile to moan and complain and call stuff they’re doing crap, cause it doesn’t give them any motivation to help you… You can take my advice or not… But coming in guns a blazing rarely works.
Have your parents go to “More” on the bottom of their sidebar on their firetv, then go to “Plex Movies & TV” and navigate to the vertical ellipses, and select “Unpin”. Or, you can try what JR suggested, log into their account at app.plex.tv and disable the feature for them.
Edit: Actually, you don’t have to go to More, if they just highlight “Movies & TV” with “on Plex” underneath it, they can click left and go to the vertical ellipses from there and click “Unpin from sidebar”. It’s pretty simple…
