Question on the migration. Regarding the PLEX server, is there any type of migration that takes place for PLEX to rediscover all of the digital content loaded, or does it migrate or use the old configurations? If there is a period of time where PLEX will be offline during its migration, is there somehow a way to determine this time period length? The reason I’m asking is that I have a lot of content on WD MyCloud PR4100 4x 8TB configuration, containing Movies, TV Series, Music & Photos that are being accessed remotely for my family and friends in different states & countries, and would like to know what the expectations are. Currently I’m also running OS3, and have not (yet) attempted to bite the bullet to upgrade to OS5.
I just took the plunge!
I read here on the forum that a few folks were recently successful w/o issues.
Updated my PR4100 to OS5. It didn’t take much time, less than 30mins.
No extra steps needed, I just let the firmware update run and reinstalled Plex when it completed.
1841 Movies & 16 TV series - Thanks for ALL your efforts making this as seamless as possible!
A post was merged into an existing topic: NAS WD pr2100 opens Plex Media Server app but upon log in plex sees it as a MEDIA PLAYER INSTEAD
Does anyone know when the apps will be updated on WDcommunity.com?
I’ve been using Tautulli for years, and hadn’t realised it can’t run on OS5.
I held off for ages, took the plunge to OS5 last week on my 2 x PR4100s, all went well, and no issues. Just need Tautulli.
IIRC you don’t need to run Tautulli on the same machine as your PMS
Thanks, i did install it on my home PC, however in order for the db to be updated, the PC must be on 247. i wonder if i can move the DB location to a shared drive back on the NAS?
My Plex runs on WD MyCloud PR4100 and is used in ways nearly identically to yours. I posted my experience above. I cannot talk to the backend technicalities but it
- took less than 30 minutes from start to finish (including reaching each each prompt closely).
- It did not have to rescan or rebuild the metadata. It just used my very customized metadata info over and used it.
- The only long last task it did, which didn’t affect any user experience with us was it took a few days to build a new preview of each video behind the scenes.
Hi, I upgraded my WDmycloud Ex4100 to OS 5 version 5.17.107 and now plex is not working at all. I am not very computer savvy but I did uninstall the plex media server and reinstalled it. But playback is not working and files are not visible on my Amazon fire tv Plex app.
Can you help?
Thank You
DS
Hi @skyfire21, Did you install the WD OS5 version from our downloads page? If not; here is the direct link: https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-media-server-new/1.24.5.5173-8dcc73a59/wd/PlexMediaServer-1.24.5.5173-8dcc73a59-WDMyCloudEX4100_OS5.bin
Hi,
Looks like holding off on updating from WD MyCloud OS3 to OS5 was the right thing to do …… I have a PR4100 and use it for Plex every day, plus storage of Photos …. I’m reading that it is now safe to upgrade with no loss of data, including Plex libraries …… it’s also easy, I just follow the instructions in the e mail from WD ?
I finally took the plunge too and upgraded to OS5 before the January deadline comes up.
Everything went smoothly when I followed the instructions.
No issues at all.
Now I need to decide if I ever want to upgrade my Plex libraries…
Question: For the folks that have upgraded to MyCloud OS 5, is there some ball park estimate how long this process takes, including the OS 5 upgrade and the upgrade for PLEX media server? The reason I ask is I currently have over 9TB of movies & TV shows on my PLEX media server and trying to determine the length of time for the outage.
About 30 mins or so (which includes the time for your WD drive to reboot, etc).
So I thought I’d provide an update to my situation, as I was particularly vocal about the lack of support on this matter last year and had a lot of hesitancy to upgrade from OS3 to OS5.
As soon as I noticed some minor issues occurring after WD said it was discontinuing support for OS3 earlier this month, I knew I had to bite the bullet and upgrade to OS5.
I carefully ensured my Plex Media Server folder was backed up from deep within the NAS drive (inside the ‘plex_conf’ folder) using an FTP client. I also ensured all my media files were also backed up just in case the worst should happen. All 10TB of it! Fortunately I have 3 external hard drives that contains duplicates of the movie and music files stored on my NAS.
I have so much metadata (a lot I presume is formed from my own customised movie and TV show cover artwork), that the Plex Media Server folder I copied via FTP is 22GB in size!! I left it copying overnight and it was done by the morning. Now you might start to understand my hesitancy in upgrading.
Anyway, this morning with everything backed up, I crossed my fingers and presed the update OS button. After a few confirmations that I wanted to proceed, it did the job. The process took about 5-10 mins, then needed to reboot my NAS drive which took another 10 minutes. A further 5 minutes spent reinstalling the apps I wanted on my NAS (specifically in this case Plex Media Server).
Then the moment of truth. I opened up Plex and all my data was still there, exactly as I had left it!! I should say there was a panic moment when I briefly couldn’t see the files after Plex wanted to update again (odd considering I had just installed it), but a further reboot of the WD NAS drive after the update has got everything back to normal.
So, yes, I’m now running OS5 and all my Plex libraries are working as before.
A big Thank You Very Much shout out to ARI-Boy for the timely response. I took the “plunge” this past Saturday and was successful in upgrading my WD MyCloud PR4100 from OS3 to OS5 without any hiccups, which included the reloading the 3rd-party apps for OS5, including PLEX, antivirus and Docker. It’s been running smoothly since then. The only thing I did not like was the disappearance of the OS5 Dashboard Capacity Pie Chart, which I have opened a WD MyCloud OS5 forum requesting it be reinstated.
Long Live the PLEX Media Server! PLEX Rocks!
I share the same frustration! I should have never upgrade to 5! I’ve tried everything I could read off the various forums…still no PMS from my PR4100…don’t know what to do anymore
