Just in case this got lost in my original post - there WAS a plex_conf folder with all the metadata (I just browsed some of it, and it looked like it had all the content of my previous libraries in it) - in /mnt/HD/HD_a2/Nas_Prog/plex_conf. . However the server never picked this up and continued to show as empty. I have a backup I took from that folder prior to creating new libraries (parts of which I can make available if that helps with troubleshooting).
Is there any chance that that data can be used to resurrect the prior server setup, alongside with all its history?
AMEN brother! tell it. Im still on OS3 as well. My music library currently stands at 1,702 albums (CDs), 18,687 songs/tracks, 414 artists, etc so… its imperative I dont lose anything or have to start all over . Im still ripping my CDs but getting closer to completing that off an on when I get some free time.
I agree we need a DETAILED video with STEP by step instructions on what to do 1st, what to turn off, on, uninstall on the NAS side as well as the app side, etc etc so its a Seamless process. I agree we are PAYING for a Plex pass but have no desire to “lose it all” or spend weeks/months rebuilding our Plex system. It was hard enough to get it to work the first time never mind after a botched update.
Im praying this can happen so we CAN all update to OS5 and have better security and better features for us all but until there is something in a video showing it actually works, i will continue to be leery about upgrading.
Yeah thats how I do the updates for my OS3 I dont update from inside the WD UI screen but instead get the updates from Plex and download the .bin file and then install it from the WD UI admin screen in the Apps area and it works fine but just wish they would have an EASY way with FULL instructions and what to do/not do and in the coreect SPECIFIC order of things so that we could not have issues after so many months invested in setting up our NAS servers and PMS libraries of stuff. For me its just my music as I dont do the movies so its not as bad but still a LOT of FLAC files (which are backed up to an external HDD) but the libraries and ensuring my Roku and NVIDIA shield and smart TVs and smart phones continue to be able to play my music from my WD MyCloud EX2 Ultra NAS server is VITAL for me as I listen to my music daily. when not using Plex I use my Amazon Prime music to alternate for stuff I dont own (but want to )
Hope we can untimately reach the OS5 goal but not looking good.
well its about time and that is VERY good news but sad for all those “guinea pigs” who were the test subjects of this craziness and had to lose data and/or have to rebuold from scratch. Terrible to have end users (paying users especially) do the beta testing befoe a product/software is launched and FULLY tested by actual end users or simulated NAS servers of the actual WD NAS products.
I have been testing upcoming v5.16.103 release and it includes a fix to prevent the PMS app data being lost after upgrading from OS3 to OS5. This should be available to users in 2-3 weeks
I made the mistake of upgrading to OS5 early on and then managed to delete my server so there is nothing to rebuild off. Any suggestions as to what steps to do next to get things going?
Currently after uninstalling, rebooting, and manually reinstalling Plex off of the Plex website I have a version of Plex that won’t respond to me selecting “Configuration” in the MYCLOUDPR4100 app. It just flashes a note about an issue with the IP. If I open Plex (Plex Pass User), I can’t get any server option to select to build upon.
I could start SSH operation, etc, and I don’t mind putting the time in to rebuild, but don’t want to dig myself into a deeper hole so to speak. Any advice on what to do next without further breaking my setup?
I’m running a WD PR4100 mainly for PLEX use. Err is it safe as yet to finally upgrade to the OS 5 or are there still major regrets from some of those who have already done so?
While we wait for a valid tried and tested WD OS 5 update…
I am still on OS 3. Can we continue to upgrade Plex server versions while still using OS 3? Or are Plex updates released by Plex all geared for OS 5 only?
That’s at least some good news - but I’m still waiting for an answer as to whether the left over plex_conf folder from a botched update can be used to re-instate the former state of the server! Again, happy to provide some insights into the contents if that helps figure out an answer.
It looks like WD have released a firmware update (version 5.16.105) that might have finally fixed the major problem of Plex libraries not being recognised after upgrading to OS5.
The release notes say it “Resolved an issue that causes the Plex database cannot be retained when updating from My Cloud OS 3 to My Cloud OS 5”.
It would be very useful if chrisallen can confirm if this has been thoroughly tested and now actually means users can migrate from WD OS3 to OS5 without destroying their Plex libraries!!
Unfortunately, I’m not willing to go first on this (especially as today is Friday 13th!!) and will be keen to learn how other users get on with it.
Hi @ARI-Boy I have tested the 5.16.105 firmware version and can confirm that it retained the Plex Media Server application data when migrating from OS3 to OS5
I would still like an answer as to whether the plex_conf folder I rescued after the botched update but wasn’t picked up when the ‘two server’ scenario happened can be successfully re-instated, and how. Is that beyond hope, or can something be done to re-use that as the last checkpoint before the update?
Hi @chrisbfan I would need to see the contents of the Preferences.xml file within that folder to be able to tell you if the server UUID in it matches your old server. Feel free to DM it to me (with your token stripped out of it)
Thank you @chrisallen for testing the new OS 3 to OS 5 firmware update.
I just wanted to confirm if other users have experienced the same success or have encountered any challenges before I bite the bullet and upgrade the firmware?
I bit the bullet and upgraded to OS5 version 5.16.105.
The OS5 setup automatically prompted for reinstall of plexserver app. Instantly after install all previous libraries showed up.
I tried a couple of different android clients, no problems. Music, photos, home vids, films, live TV channels all there.
Nice work Plex, working with WD to sort this out.
I went ahead and upgraded my PR4100 raid 10 from OS 3 to OS 5. It went smooth and no hiccups at all. When asked, I installed the recommend Plex app, but then had to download an updated OS 5 version from the Plex website to update that.
But it moved over all my data, libraries, metadata, databases, etc… So did not loose my custom collections / view history / custom metadata / graphics.
I did take the extra precaution before hand to backup all of my data and to use SSH to backup all of my Plex databases and settings. Here is a GREAT video to show step by step how easy it is to backup the Plex database & settings in case something happens (like the power goes out midway through the upgrade)
My PR4100 upgraded without any apparent hitches - same experience as you’ve described. I’ve been waiting to do this for some time so glad to have gained the confidence to finally do it via this forum - TVM
Thats is good news.
I am still hesitant and still on OS3.
Please advise if there is a very DETAILED step by Step guide tutorial for non IT folks with basic tech savvy skills to be able to successfully do this on a WD MyCloud EX2 Ultra NAS Server.
I cant take a chance with my Music lIbrary of 420 artists / 1729 albums/CDs / 18,900+ songs/tracks (and growing every day as I continue to rip all my CDs to FLAC).
Need to know on all 3 fronts what to do and in WHAT ORDER to success
WD NAS UI end
Plex Media Server end
Plex app end
Plex settings end
etc
what to turn off/on and in what order
there needs to be a clear way to do this without losing data or having to start all over otherwise users will abandon ship
