Complete media server

Could we please please please get an expansion of the types of media files PLEX recognizes and displays?

PLEX is a personal multimedia server. It only makes sense that it should also have the capacity to display written media, games media, compressed files, and basically any type of file a person would want to upload to their server, so that those who have access to their server would be able to at the very least download a copy of the uploaded file, if not the ability to even open and display other types of media files.

Adding the ability to upload and have PLEX display text and image file types opens up the potential for PLEX for create additional server directories dedicated for things like “Print and Text” which would be intended for file types like .txt, .doc, etc where PLEX could open and display text files that people would use to store digital books, manuals, documents, Even extending out to more rich media like .pdf, .mob, .cbr that would further extend the sections cope to include things like digital copies of newspapers, magazines and comic books. Even if this section does not include the various readers needed to recognize and display the files content, then at the very least such a section would grant users of a given server the capacity to browse such a directory of files so that they can directly download the file on intended device.

Additional sections would be useful such as “Games” as well as “Programs/apps” media types for directories assigned for installation files as either a compressed file types such as .rar or .zip, .iso. Installer file extensions like .exe, .apk, As well as any other valid type installer file extensions. PLEX would create relevant media type sections to display the directories of available game/program files for direct download. Much the same as the sections designed for TV vs Film video and audio files.

This puts PLEX more in line with traditional media platforms such as File Transfer Protocol FTP servers. Utilizing popular and commonplace types of media in addition to audio, video and photo image content PLEX currently handles already. Offering vastly improved capability with more complete functional capacity

Deployment needs minimal development and resources to launch. Creating a high return on low investment project that yields considerable tangible benefits while contributing to the evolution of PLEX.

Greater resources are utilized producing far less useful, efficient, practical, and sought features…

Yet serious detrimental consequences result as neglect of its implementation continues

.Such negligence drives potential users to seek competing platforms where it is present.

A media server unable to access server media only serves to invalidate the purpose of its existence.

wait what? This is a media server to serve media content, ie movies, tv shows music. this is not a file server. File servers are a dime a dozen.

As @Mdhwoods1 stated, this is a MEDIA server; not a NAS replacement. There’s already a variety of software that provides that functionality, e.g. UnRAID, QNAP, Synology, Steam In-house Streaming, etc…

YEAH, The guy who started this thread is stupid.

I mean God forbid we have a media server that displays media. Media such as text files, .pdf, comic book, edocs, magazines, ect or give a directory for video games be them in .exe or .apk format.

I mean seriously why add something that would benefit PLEX and its users. We’ve got VR we got to worry about working on.

I think it is a great idea.

add any file you want, create a library or tags for it, if the native plex player can’t handle it, then let the applicable default app for that file type open it.

obviously if there is no default app available on a particular platform for a particular file type, then that file type won’t be opened.
