Computers on local network showing up as remote connections all of a sudden

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

I don’t have the version numbers handy but they are currently updated to the most recent as of May 24. I have one computer running as my media server and several other computers throughout my house all connected to audio-video receivers. Recently I’ve lost all lossless audio despite it being set to pass through and I’ve had to set my remote quality to original despite them being on the same network. Any suggestions?

Did you switch routers or ISPs recently?

Most likely it has to do with ‘DNS servers’ or ‘DNS rebinding protection’
Both are defined in your router.

Usually, you set DNS server to ‘automatic’ so that is uses whatever your ISP tells it to use. Unfortunately, some ISPs mess this up and provide DNS servers which don’t handle the .direct TLD well.
So define your own DNS server. Use Google’s for instance (8.8.8.8)

DNS rebinding protection is normally a good thing. However, most implementations misfire at Plex’s (totally legitimate) use of the DNS system. Therefore one needs to define an exception for the domain plex.direct

After making changes in your router, it is best to reboot the router first,
then after a few minutes the Plex server
and after another few minutes all your Plex clients.

Do also check that
Settings - Server - Network - ‘Show Advanced’ - “LAN Networks”
contains the network address of your local network, e.g. 192.168.1.0/24

and that ‘Treat WAN IP As LAN Bandwidth’ is checked

After making any changes there, restart your Plex server and let it sit for a few minutes.

I did switch routers but when I switch them I did not have a problem. Until recently. All the suggestions you have made except for the DNS I’ve done and I actually rebooted everything and it’s back now. Not quite sure what happened. But thank you so much for your input

Google DNS did it! I tried to cloudflare’s DNS as it’s supposed to be the fastest but it did not like it. So I will stick with the Google DNS thanks for the info again

So now the issue is when I set a port forwarding rule for remote access, that’s when it starts treating all computers on network as remote. Any ideas?

Didn’t you say it was fixed before?
What did you change now?

I,added a port forward rule and second I apply it it goes back to remote

Where? In your router or in the user interface of Plex server?

I’m router. It’s a Netgear Nighthawk 7000p. And I think I’m just going to return it because it’s been nothing but problems as it’s also disconnecting me from Steam constantly.

You know, if you are changing a port forwarding for Plex in your router, you must also inform Plex about this change.
Settings - Server - Remote Access
Tick the checkbox ‘Manually specify public port’ and put the external port number behind it.

That is the port number that I am forwarding.

That is only true if you have used the same port number for both the internal and the external/WAN interface.
But if the numbers are different, then you must use the external port number.

They are the same. It really comes down to this router. I never had a problem until I installed it. Thank you for your help. I’m just going to return it and put the original one back in
