Confused - Plex vs Plex Media Server

I have Plex.Exe and Plex Media Server.Exe on my computer. When I start Plex.exe I see my video, photos etc. (Not sure How I even got them into Plex finally!) When I try to execute Plex Media Server.exe nothing happens. Please try to unconfuse me! Thanks so much

you are essentially running client and server on the one machine (perfectly normal).

The media server runs and you connect to it via a webpage or a player. The player just access the server.

Plex operates on a server-client model. The PlexMediaServer.exe launches the server portion which, by itself, has no user interface. There’s nothing to see. It runs in the background and listens for requests from clients. It must be running in order for you to play your media on a client.

Plex.exe launches a “client” application, with the user interface that you see. There are several Plex clients - Plex.exe, Plex Web (the web page at https://app.plex.tv), Plex for Roku, Plex for Android, etc.

The Plex Web client serves a dual purpose. It provides a user interface to allow you to configure your Plex server, create libraries, invite users, share libraries, etc. It can also play your media, just like the other clients.

When you tell the client to play a movie, the client sends the request to the server. The server responds by opening the file for that movie and sends it back to the client, and the client plays it for you.

A more general explanation of the server-client model can be found here:

Thank You Beckfield, you hit it on the nose! Sometimes it’s hard to grasp exactly what we’re asking but you did, and now I understand.
