Plex and VPN’s is a hard thing to manage since plex authenticates via the internet and not locally… good luck with it, but I don’t think you’re going to get it to work honestly…
Plex and PIA split tunneling works well with MacOS and Windows, it uses application exception so all other apps use the tunnel. Myself I use a non default Browser like Chrome for Plex Web, with a bookmark to launch PMS. That way your email etc, will open automatically with the default Browser.
No more DNS binding issues, VPN can be on always without issue. To cover power outages, setup your start up items and set your server start up after an outage. That way remote access is assured.
Now if your trying to push Plex via a VPN, that is not so easy. As @ JasonNalley explained. I hope your aware authenticating Plex via a https secure connection is safe, as the address below will provide.
Hehe, everyone goes for PIA, but with their recent controversy, even if I was in the market for a VPN, they would be very low on my list. Check out some of the youtube videos from Linus Tech Tips (search PIA Linus Tech Tips), and read about PIA Acquired by Malware company, and you’ll see why.
Hey Jason, I don’t know if you may do that, but did you try changing the default route of the plexserver to its directly connected router?
If you do that, only the traffic originated from your 10.x.x.x/24 will be forwarded to the vpn tunnel and Plex Seeverwill be able to authenticate you.
You need to be more specific with your references. I did a short search and didn’t see anything bad being said about PIA. Don’t post shade on an organization unless you have specific information with direct links to your supporting evidence. Thanks. I don’t work for PIA.
PIA is very popular, reasonably priced, and have put a person with a shady past in the driver’s seat. Does that mean PIA is shady? No, it doesn’t.
If this PIA stink gets any more ripe - they’ll get rid of that guy. Problem Solved.
It is interesting that VPNs, for the most part, are used to mask your identity so you can do something nefarious. In that case wouldn’t you WANT Don Corleone VIII in the Driver’s Seat? He’s not in prison, maybe he can keep me out of one…lol
Frankly I’m more worried about Facebook. So worried, in fact, I don’t use them or any other Social Media just because Facebook is THAT CLOSE to a criminal organization. Nobody cares if FaceBook mines your data and sells it to the highest bidder.
Here’s an expose on Crossrider which later became Kape:
Here’s a Malware Bytes article detailing one of Crossriders pieces of Malware:
It’s not hard to look this all up on your own… click a few links and read, especially the LinusTechTips forum. I am not “Throwing Shade” I said if I was in the market they would be low on my list because of the controversy. That’s not throwing shade.
Edit: Here’s the Wan Show episode where he talks about the interview
Whether they’re operating above board now or not, The fact that Kape/Crossrider has the past that they have, Mark Karpelès being associated with them has the past that he has, and the fact that they’re in a 5 eyes country… That’s all stuff that works against them when I personally make my determination for working with a company. If you have different criteria, so be it.. I don’t know what Linus’s opinion is on still working with them, I didn’t watch the first video posted above specifically because I wanted to form my own opinion, and they simply have too many things working against them.
All good points. One exception, the purpose of VPN is not to hide illegal or nefarious activities, it is to protect your identity from the likes of Facebook, Google, and other bad actors that assume your private information is theirs to use as the wish to make tons of money without your permission.
My recommendation to everyone: Read up on self-sovereign identity and blockchain. Those two items, in combination, can completely eliminate misuse of your information, and, can bring back REAL journalism and reliable news reporting.
Technically.
Technically, they also keep my ISP off my back.
PIA works great, is reasonably priced, does exactly what they say they do, and now they’ve developed Exclusions that work with Plex. That’s all I need to know.
For those of you who use VPN via PrivateVPN you now have to connect with UDP 1195 instead of with 1194 if you want open ports. Maybe this information will help someone who has had problems recently.
