ok so not sure why, but i can’t access plex from my tv at home on my network when my vpn is connected. anyone know why? this should only be the case when trying to access it remotely, not on my home network. right? and even then, i have my vpn set with the proper port open and it says i have remote access anyways. can someone explain why this isn’ working on my home network? i feel like my vpn shouldn’t mess with this at all when i’m on my home network. right? i’m using plex on my samsung tv and my server is my imac. as soon as the vpn is on, my tv plex app states it can’t access my server. any help? thanks.
What device is connecting to the VPN? Where is the VPN endpoint (is the server out somewhere in the world, or are you connecting to a VPN you host)? Is it the router that is VPN connecting to another location?
I have a lot of suggestions, but I think that by finding out what is going on in the network I think I can give you an idea what is up.
EDIT: In case this helps: The way your devices can find your Plex server is by the IP that the server is running under. Your server reports to the MASTER PLEX server what the computers (local) IP is. Then, when a client logs in on your account, the MASTER PLEX server tells your client the IP of the server. If you are in the same network, then it should be able to find it and work.
If the IP changes (turning on a VPN), then it can take time for the server to report a new IP to the MASTER PLEX server. Or if the client is on a VPN, it may be in a different VPN-only network and be unable to reach the network the server was in.
It’s… technical.
If the server is on a VPN, many clients cannot connect at all.
You would need a VPN service which allows “port forwardings”.
The better method though is to create an exception rule for the plex server to not use the VPN.
(not all VPN apps allow this.)
