Connectivity Issues with PlexConnect

Hi all,

I would be extremely grateful if you could please let know what solutions you might have to correct the issues I am having, as described in more detail below.

Many thanks

Your ATV model (2 or 3) and firmware version (found under the ATV settings > general > about > Apple TV software):

ATV 2, firmware version 6.2.1 (6698.99.50.41)

The DNS server set on the ATV (found under the ATV settings > general > network > DNS):

10.0.1.27

The local IP address of the device that PlexConnect is installed on:

10.0.1.27

The device and operating system (including version number) that PlexConnect is installed on:

Macbook Pro, OSX Yosemite v10.10.2

The device and operating system (including version number) that the Plex media server (PMS) is installed on:

Macbook Pro, OSX Yosemite v10.10.2

The Plex media server (PMS) version number you are running (do not put 'latest'):

0.9.11.7.803-87d0708

The local IP address of the device that the Plex media server (PMS) is installed on:

10.0.1.27

The PlexConnect version number. If using Github source then a time and date of download (look at the creation date of the folder) and if you are using any non-standard setup e.g. Plexify or a fork.

0.4.2

The contents of your 'Settings.cfg' file (this is created at first clean shutdown of PlexConnect, using CTR+c)

Detail on the media file if it is an issue related to playing a media file (in order to get the necessary information on a particular media file go into the Plex web interface, select the video file, when it brings up the page for the media file click on the "i" information button on the left hand side, it will then bring up a "media info" box, click on the "View XML" button, it will then open a browser window with the relevant information, copy this to http://www.pastebin.comand use the pastebin link to post the details; posting the information directly in the forum may mess up the formatting and generally takes up a lot of space):

The issue does not arise only in relation to a specific media file – it arises across various video files.

A detailed description of the issue (the clearer you can make this the better):

The following issues arise (which I suspect are interrelated):-

  • The main issues are that (i) in the middle of streaming a video file the streaming will stop. This happens randomly and on occasion. In other words, sometimes I can watch a full movie with no interruption and sometimes there are numerous interruptions and (ii) if the ATV has not been used for long stretches but is not switched off (eg 24 hrs), when selecting a program/movie to watch you see the circular dial turning as if the program/movie is about to start playing, but in fact it does not start playing and the dial just keeps on spinning . To “fix” either problem I either (a) restart AppleTV or ( B) I go to DNS settings on ATV, change manual DNS to automatic, change automatic DNS to manual, re-enter my device DNS and then return to the video;
  • On restarting my AppleTV, there are, on occasion, only two “icons” on the welcome screen – “settings” and I can’t remember the second. I then need to go DNS settings on ATV, change automatic DNS to manual, enter my device DNS and then I get full functionality of the ATV

Ensure you post your 'PlexConnect.log' file to pastebin and post the link

Personally I use jailbroken iOS 5.3 on all my aTV'2 as a PlexConnect host per post 355.

Your issue seems like your network is dropping out causing the aTV to lose internet or your mac is going to sleep and/or you have PMS prevent app nap not enabled in the get info option of the app (right click Plex media server.app). Could also be on older iOS versions but I haven't personally seen it on lower then iOS 7(8) while others have:

https://forums.plex.tv/topic/121863-ios-8-black-screen-of-death

When you say 4.2 do you mean OpenPlex.app version 0.4.2 which is not PlexConnect (Latest version of OpenPlex is 0.5 by the way, and just a PlexConnect installer app)? PlexConnect is currently running Version 0.5-Dev.

Thanks for the response. I went through all the different PMS settings and couldn't find the "PMS Prevent app nap" setting. Where do I find it?

Tks

Looks like it might be gone in OS X 10.10.x PMS (Maybe they built it into PMS idk). Usually its here:

What about the other questions I asked? Also is the mac set to not goto sleep in the energy saver options in your system preferences.app? PlexConnect and PMS usually require a dedicated always on device if your mac goes to sleep you will need to restart the aTV to get PlexConnect working under normal circumstances. Thats why on a aTV2 I always make it a dedicated PlexConnect host on the device itself (aTV2) for traveling and easy of use per the above post. Others have used the WOL Plists using OpenPlex.app or in that topic itself to wake their sleepy mac:

Thanks - bear with me as I'm a bit wet behind the ears with this stuff. My response to your questions are as follows:

  • Mac is definitely not going to sleep as I can generally access my PMS 24/7 from many different ios devices. The issue I am having is confined to my ATV.
  • You are right - I meant openplex app is version 0.4.2 - I guess I should upgrade then to 0.5.
  • As regards plexconnect, is there a terminal command I need to use to see what version I am running?

1. So when you exit the hijacked app and re-enter it does it work or do you require the auto then manual DNS change?

2. What theme are you using?

3. Do you require PIL/Pillow (fanart)?

4. Do you have the PlexConnect auto updates enabled in OpenPlex.app?

Usually in the settings tab of PlexConnect on the aTV it will tell you what version of PlexConnect your are using.

1. Require the auto then manual change

2. Default/Standard theme. I tried one of the others but then reverted to the original.

3. No

4. No

If you want to click the remote assistance button I can downgrade your aTV2 to iOS 5.3 JB it and make it a dedicated host if you desire. Just click my name and send me a message. I always use it on all my aTV2's for multiple purposes (they are rare nowadays). Do you have a micro USB cable you can use that will fit the back of the aTV and that you can hook into your mac USB?

Thanks - that is really kind. I can't do it at the moment as I am not at home. If you wouldn't mind, can I get in touch with you over the next day or so when I am at home? What time zone are you in? I am London based.

CST time

Seems similar to this problem, not yet solved.
