Considering RasPlex - Pricing up all the bits...

Am considering buying my first Pi and setting it up as a standalone RasPlex client.  Have a few questions...

Shopping list

  1. New Pi 2 (1Gb RAM, 900Mhz Quad Core version) with clear case ~ £32 on Amazon
  2. 10w (2A, 5V) Power supply
  3. 8Gb Micro SD card (Class 10) ~ £5
  4. RF remote - ???

Needs to be an RF or Bluetooth remote, as the Pi will be hidden behind the TV meaning IR won't work.  Any recommendations here, something like the boxee remote would be perfect (simple navigation like an apple tv remote on one side, keyboard on the back).

Anything else needed, hardware wise?  I know there are licenses etc. to purchase too, but focusing on hardware at the moment.

small FYI:

There is no need for a separate remote if your tv supports HDMI-CEC

Am pretty sure it has Bravia Sync.  Would be good to use the TV remote, will have a search around for how!

Am pretty sure it has Bravia Link.

Then you are all set.

You can keep a USB-connected keyboard around, but once the initial setup is done all you need to do is switch to the HDMI port with the Pi connected. Then you can at least use the cursor keys, the 'enter' and 'back' keys and probably several more of the original Sony remote.

Will give it a go, if it comes to it then I can always get a remote down the line.

Would a 4Gb micro SD card be enough (got an old one somewhere...)

it must be a 'Class10' card and a good quality one at that. A simple search here in the subforum will give you plenty of experience reports with several brands.

You can also use the plex app as a controller. I set it all up this way without the need for a keyboard.
