on the lookout for specific remote

I'm just setting up a rasplex client right now, with the intention of running 10+ on the network (! possible I hope - at least the server is super fast, maybe that helps)

One requirement that I have with the setups is that they all must use a solid and easy to use remote control.  So no web-based controls, no ios or android-based apps, no wireless keyboards etc.

I can't seem to find good information on exactly what I need to just hook up either:

1) wifi/bluetooth-enabled remote

2) IR-remote, obviously with some additional required hardware?

And if any of those two options are good, which remotes would you recommend?

The remote that comes with our philips TVs apparently doesn't work properly through CEC. Our other Sony TV that we are testing on is a KLV-60EX640 and it detects CEC while booting just before the initial setup but then it is stuck on the initial set up wizard.

Any thoughts much appreciated!

Try using a keyboard to configure the Pi and see if CEC works after that?  My Sony (55HX929) works perfectly with CEC (but also at boot).

Like he said!

Nothing beats simplicity like a CEC capable remote that already came with your TV. (using a SONY TV and remote as well)

I am currently testing out a RASPLEX box to replace my 87 year old Mother-in-Law's Roku2.  She uses a Roku Standard Remote Control which is IR.  I have an FLIRC Universal Remote USB Dongle and it works great.  I choose this to simplify her use of the remote, just the basic navigation buttons.  She has a second remote that is a Tek Pal Large Button Remote programmed to control the TV for Volume, Channel, and On/Off.  Pretty basic, but less is more when dealing with some users.

Another recomendation for FLIRC from me - USB dongle that once configured allows you to use any remote control you want (IR).

Try one of these, I've been using one for 6 months, bulletproof, you can also power on/off the Pi with it.

hmm seems tough to get those FLIRC units here in asia.

I'll play with the CEC on the sony a bit more, but I think it's out of the Philips TVs range.  I've successfully used those Logitech harmony remotes on the philips TVs though, I'll have to play more with it tomorrow.

So everyone using a third-party remote is basically using something like FLIRC or that msidigital remotepi board?

OK so raspberry pi working more or less as expected. Still no CEC support after things are up and running. I suppose the smartest and easiest thing would be to find the ultimate remote and then just find a way to get myself a FLIRC unit. right? Any other ideas?

With the FLIRC would it be easy for that new remote to also handle the normal TV functions? Any ultimate simple-remote suggestions ideal for these two tasks?

is this board only for on/off function or can it aditionally be used to perform the normal remote commands like navigating or play/pause ?

You can program any remote to get full IR remote functionality. Check out the details on the web site, installed and up and running in minutes, you'll need to SSH in to complete the configuration.

cool finally what i searched for :)

I like this remote solution, I'm concerned about it fitting into standard cases.  (I know it does require a case modification for the power.

I have settled on the Short Crust case (mainly because it relocates the power to the same side as the USB/Ethernet), I'm hoping that the power will reach to the add-on board.  The other reason I like the Short Crust case is it extends the length of the case to prevent the SDXC card from sticking out.

The last concern I have is the Short Crust case is not transparent, except for the top of the case (lid), so IR signals may be problematic.

I may have to experiment with this myself, but if anyone has any insight to any of these, I'd appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,

FrankRam
