Consistency for display of 'Other Videos' // mod: portrait posters

Other Videos: I use this to add things like Standup Comedy with it’s own Library. Home Movies. Special Feature videos from movie bluray releases.

Web App

In the web app selecting these libraries shows the posters I manually added for each video. View by folders, and then click into a folder, again shows the posters.

Under Discover, recently added videos show in landscape, using the poster and so only the middle of each poster is shown, which looks a mess.

Nvidia Shield

Using Nividia Shield, under Discover, recently added videos show in landscape but here the selected Background image is shown. Inconsistent with the web app.

Go into one of the libraries, it shows the posters. But view by folder, and then clicking into a folder, it shows squares for each video(?) with the poster again used but of course cut off showing only what fits in the square.

So much inconsistency. Why??

Ideally all apps and the web browser would display the library in the same way:

  • Under Discovery videos show the background image.
  • Within the libraries show the poster, regardless of whether in all videos view, or folder view within a selected folder.

Or better yet just show the poster for everything, including recently added videos in Discover view.

My regular Other Video libraries already look really great on the new Plex Layout on my Apple TV. But if I browse through my videos using the Web Version oder the client on my computer it uses the poster for a horizontal images which results in the image being cut. My proposal is to switch to the regular Poster view and like this is already being done on the Apple TV.

As an example I’ve created 2 Test videos with the following Poster and Wallpaper:

Video 1 - Poster:

Video 1 - Wallpaper:

Video 2 - Poster:

Video 2 - Wallpaper:

On the Web Version it is being displayed as the following:

On the Apple TV it looks like this:

I’m not sure I understand your suggestion.
Could you share an example of how things look different between the Apple TV and Plex Web (and how you’d like them to look)?

Is this only about Other Video type libraries?

This bleeds into a request that I have wanted to ask about for a while but also for TV shows as well. There is no support for vertical poster style thumbnails on any library other than movies. This has been annoying me for a very long time because I have been trying to put all of my "“tv movies” in their respective tv shows for a long time but they look terrible in the tv section because it makes them look like tv shows instead of full length movies with their own metadata. I recently thought of a way to get around this by making a 1080p png with the poster in the middle and transparency around the rest of the space to simulate a real thumbnail giving my desired effect in the picture I attached. I would just love the option for 1 or both of these suggestions.

  1. Allow for either landscape or portrait orientation for all of the libraries on a case by case basis (I understand this could effect the grid layout so maybe padding could help with that.

OR (both or this suggestion)

  1. Allow people to upload full scale covers and choose and option to fit the poster the way I have it in the attached picture instead of stretching the picture to fit the landscape option.

This would fix my issues as well as this person’s I believe. Thanks for reading this.

I updated my initial post with an example to demonstrate what I mean. It’s really hard to provide the perfect image if you have to optimize it for an vertical and horizontal view as well

And yes this only applies to the Other Video type libraries.

There is also another type of Video library you could use:
A normal “Movies” type of library (agent: “Plex Movie”), wherein you manually “unmatch” every item.
Which then allows you provide both poster and wallpaper as local extras.
And the poster will be always in portrait orientation in all clients.

Okay that rather sounds tedious to reimport my videos and unmatch everything.
And I always have to remember to do this for every new video.

As far as i can tell personal media libraries only display landscape thumb nails. I have created box art for my library filled with live concerts and music video collections that can’t be matched. I want to view this library like any movie library with box art. Using plex movie is a nightmare because you auto merge and match everything wrong.
Give us more customization, my launchbox can display box art in 10 different ways, give us this flexibility.

Use the “Plex Movie” agent for this library.
Then use “Unmatch” on those entries which cannot be matched to online databases. (TheMovieDB.org has actually quite a few records for live concerts and the like, so this might not be necessary with all items.)

Due to this, the poster format will be portrait and you can use any local assets which you can also use in movie libraries. https://support.plex.tv/articles/200220677-local-media-assets-movies/ https://support.plex.tv/articles/local-files-for-trailers-and-extras/

It appears currently that Plex only allows for Banner (horizonal) style posters for Other Videos Library Type. It would be preferred to allow for Portrait (vertical) style posters. I’ve triedr all the scanner and agent options and I dont beleive you are able to switch between the two which makes my other video library posters appear cut off and incorrect. Please consider changing or allowing the option.
