I live near the Canadian border in a location where there is duplicate programming on Canadian and American channels. Being near Lake Ontario, weather conditions can frequently affect reception and you often won’t know in advance. It might make for a bad signal on the Canadian channels to the northeast or the American channels to the south.
I have four tuners which is more than I would use most of the time. For my “do not miss” shows, I like to record the same episode on the Canadian and American channels at the same time so that I can watch the better quality one. This is utterly impossible with the Plex scheduler.
For some reason, the Plex system is based on the one overriding principle: No sane human could ever possibly want to record the same episode of a show a second time. This principle overrides everything.
Well, Plex, we’re not insane and lot’s of us having extremely valid reasons for wanting to do this. My reason is perfectly reasonable and if we asked around, might not even be that unusual. But EPG errors occur all the time causing Plex to see something as a duplicate and thus Plex refuses to record it.
And before someone tells me that I should just record the duplicate to a 2nd TV library, remember that you only allow us to have one series recording rule for a show and you can’t also record individual episodes if you have a series rule.
Using a 2nd library might technically work if I disable series recording and specifically schedule every episode of the show individually. This just isn’t ok for a DVR that we have to pay for. You should be striving for more than “it might technically work”.
With NextPVR, I just create two recording rules: 1) Record All New Episodes on channel A and 2) Record All New Episodes on channel B
NextPVR doesn’t get all judgemental at me, decide that I’m crazy and refuse to do it.
The whole purpose of a DVR is for us to record TV so that we can watch it later. It’s not a hard concept and PLEX fails miserably at letting us do that.
Is this ever going to change?
