I have two Windows 10 PCs and both are connected to an audio source. PC one contains my hard drives and has Plex server installed and is connected to a stereo source. PC two I use to stream from PC one through a web browser and is working very well!
What I would like to do is use the web browser on PC two to output audio on PC one?
So would you recommend PMP, Plex HTPC, or something else on PC one? I simply want to play back stereo music files on the server PC but control it from the other PCs web browser…
As Otto mentions, you cannot use Plex to stream audio from an external source.
You can control playback of certain clients from other clients. For example, run Plex for Windows on PC One and control it with Plex Web on another PC, Plex client on a mobile phone, etc.
I guess the “both are connected to an audio source” is confusing. I only meant that both PCs have their own separate audio output (source) and I would like to control both from the web browser on the PC without the server.
So going back to the original question, which player would be better to use, the old Plex Media Player OR the newer Plex HTPC or some other player that can be controlled through the Plex web browser? Are 3rd party players compatible? Main thing I am looking for in the player is exclusive mode WASAPI.
The documentation lists clients that can control/be controlled.
Plex for Windows has an Exclusive Audio Mode setting: “Bypasses the system audio mixer, ensuring that only the media’s audio is sent unchanged to the output device. This prevents sounds from other applications on the selected device.”
I don’t have PMP or Plex HTPC installed, so cannot say what audio options they provide.
Plex documentation has additional info on Plex Media Player and Plex Mac/Win Desktop. I have not seen any formal documentation for Plex HTPC.
Thanks. I was hoping this was a simple question but I guess not. I will just install PMP and go from there. This was my first question here I think because I usually just figure it out for myself. I should have just stuck to that plan.
If anyone who cares about my results posts here, I will relay my findings, if not, thanks again. See you on the flip side.
