Hi, I have PMS running on a headless linux server attached to my amplifier. I'd like to control PMS from my Laptop or Ipod, but sound should be played directly on the PMS to the attached amplifier instead of getting streamed to the client.

--I am not a developer-- but i don't see this happening in plex as it goes against the separation of Server and Client.
I agree with OrionShock on this one. Even if it sits on the same box as PMS, what you are describing is a client function. Keep in mind that many PMS installations lack any sound or display hardware at all.
Even if it's against Client/Server separation it would be convenient and save energy and money. Maybe there's another possibility to use the server as direct audio output with plex.

I would love this, i currently manually open itunes on my (non-headless) server and then control it using the iphone app. It would be great if i could simply start playing music without launching itunes.
Sadly though, i have to agree that this client feature is unlikely to make its way into PMS, but i wish it would though some client-esq plugin.
I have PHT running on my mostly headless (projector, so only on when I am watching videos) PMS PC and am using Plex/Web to remote control PHT to play music. Its not optimal yet as I have to drill down to the track level to issue a remote play command, but otherwise it works nicely.
Hi,
is there any other solution achievable to have audio output on the same headless server running? A client without a gui ?
Cheers Oli
Well, not that I know of. You are theoretically only required to interact with the UI once for setup (log in to my.plex), the rest is remotecontrollable. For all the other cases, for example if PHT crashed (which it did in the past, but the current build seems quite stable), I use TeamViewer. Might not be your perfect steup, but you should be able to make it work.

I don’t see a conflict with their ideology. Consider for example the chrome cast audio. As far as I know the music is streamed directly from the server to the chrome cast with the web interface or app acting as a sort of remote.
And now imaging that a similar software would be running in parallel to the PMS. You still have the separation of server and client but it just so happens that both programs are installed on the same device. It’s also not so different from their current setup with the Plex Media Player. We would just like to get rid of the GUI
well if your ok with running both the server & a client on the same device, just about any Plex Client can be remote controlled with the mobile app.
So you could setup the Media Server and the Media Player on the same computer & then use an iPhone/Android to remote control it.
