Controlling the Plex app on Apple TV with Plexamp

Is it possible to control my music on Plex using the Plex app for Apple TV with Plexamp as a remote control?

When I have the Plex app open on Apple TV, I can ‘cast’ to it from my Plex iOS app, but not from my Plexamp iOS app. The player does not show up in the ‘cast’ list there.

Plexamp does not support casting to other Plex clients.

It does. I can:

  • Control the music on my Plex Media Player on Windows with my Plexamp app on iOS
  • Control the music on my Plex Media Player on Windows with my Plexamp app on macOS
  • Control the music on my Plex Media Player on Windows with my Plexamp app on Windows
  • Control the music on my Plex for Mac app with my Plexamp app on iOS
  • Control the music on my Plex for Mac app with my Plexamp app on macOS
  • Control the music on my Plex for Mac app with my Plexamp app on Windows

In other words, any combination of Plexamp being a ‘companion’ and PMP being the ‘player’ seems to work. But, I can’t get it to work for Apple TV.

In other topics I read as well that Plexamp itself can act as a ‘companion’, but not as a ‘player’, therefore using Plexamp in combination with Plex Media Player seems the preferred approach.

This is why I’m asking if Apple TV is also supported. If not, will it be in the near future?

I also have this problem! I can control all the other Plex players in my home from Plexamp on IOS except for my Apple TV which I can’t get to show up on my phone as a player.

I can, however, control the Plex Apple TV app from the Plex app (not Plexamp) on IOS. The problem here though is that the IOS app ‘forgets’ that it is remote playing after about five minutes and everytime I want to change song I have to manually click back on the player which is tedious.

I found out, PlexAmp does support casting to other Plex clients. There is a bug around this being investigated.

I also have this problem with plexamp 3.4.2 on iOS 14.

I’m a Plex Pass holder with the Plex server, players and my iPhone all on the same local network.

plexamp on iOS does not see (for casting/flinging purposes) Plex running on my Apple TV 4K.

I also tested this plexamp with the Plex app running on my Roku. plexamp sees the Roku but it hangs for me when try to fling anything to it. I’ve never successfully gotten plexamp to control Plex on either the Apple TV or the Roku.

I’m pretty new to Plex so its possible that I haven’t configured something correctly.

Interesting, i can’t see any other player than device running the app, tried: plex app on fireTV stick plexamp on windows, linux, 2 samsungs s 20 and iphone11, never was able to cast to other player. all devices on the same network.
