Conversion failed. A required codec could not be found or failed to install

Hello. I recently did the latest Shield Experience TV Upgrade for my Nvidia Shield and now my videos won’t transcode to devices inside or outside my network. I’ve tried to troubleshoot this and cannot figure out how to fix it. I can direct play a video from the shield itself but nothing else will play.
It says " Conversion failed. A required codec could not be found or failed to install."

First check whether the video format is supported.

If it is, you might want to try the following: go to your [plex-root]/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Codecs directory and move its content (1 or two directories) to a save location. Then restart plex, the content should be downloaded again. Try and play the file.

Sorry but how do you browse that path in the Nvidia Shield? I can’t find that path. And to answer you’re first question, yes every video I had was playable before and now they are not.

Make sure PMS is up to date. Current version is 1.7.3.3937.

Others have reported the same message. The fix was to update PMS & restart the ShieldTV.

You can search the forums for the error message. Here’s two references:

Note that the app auto-update feature on Shield TV does not always work. You can force the update via the web interface to Google Play Store.

Might as well update the client at the same time. Current version is 6.0.1.523.

Thanks for the info. I hadn’t checked to see if there was an update for PMS or the Plex App, I got impatient and uninstalled Plex, PMS and started over. I reinstalled the latest updates for both and now everything works again, my users can now stream no problem again. Obviously something was broken after the Shield Experience Upgrade last week and now its working again. Thanks for the help.

I am getting this same error message trying to watch a channel via my Hauppauge USB TV Tuner. Can anyone help with that? I uninstalled all the Plex updates, cleared all the cache and data, forced closed both plex server and player and disabled them. Restarted my Shield, then re-enabled both and then went into Google Play Store and did the update for both. I was then able to launch the Plex Server which started the setup process over again. I went through it just like the first time, and everything went smooth. It saw my Tuner and I verified which channels were available and finished the setup. Currently, t is going through and updating the database with the info for the videos from my video folder. So, I opened Plex from the apps list on the main Shield page, and went to Live TV, Program Guide, down to On Right Now, and selected the first channel. Now I get “An error has occurred, please try again later” What the heck is going on? Everything was working fine this weekend. Today was the first day I have tried to use Plex since Saturday, and none of my scheduled programs recorded. Please help.

Well, things seem to be working, not perfect but working. I found the status link at he bottom of the main website and apparently while server maintenance is happening, I wasn’t able to “claim server” and I’m guessing because the server wasn’t claimed yet I couldn’t watch OTA Antenna tv. That’s the dumbest thing I have ever seen if that’s true.If it’s not, please tell me why it wouldn’t work. Still getting this weird buffer thing that jumps back like 2 seconds and then starts playing again.
