After the last update to PMS I have started getting “Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error.” seemingly at random. It normally works to just resume playback, albeit with it struggling to get going some times.
I have tried switching quality back and forth a bit and sometimes that seems to fix it but I have not really found anything that I can confidently say is a “fix”. I have not found a pattern to when the error occurs.
Some (possibly) relevant stuff:
I watch all my shows and movies with subtitles
This has happened both on my computer, my phone, and another laptop.
This has happened both when streaming from the same network the server is on and when streaming from outside the network
The server is running on my computer (not a separate machine or such)
Hopefully my logs below together with the above information can tell you what is causing it.
If you need any other information let me know.
Server Version#: 1.20.1.3252
Player Version#: 4.42.1
If yall find an answer please let me know! having the same issue! OP what is doing the transcoding? Mine is an nvidia gtx 1070, wonder if that has anything to do with it.
It seems we aren’t getting anywhere with this topic. I had another movie not work tonight. Downloaded and signed up for Infuse 6 Pro on Apple TV. No problems streaming from Plex. I feel like it’s a client issue?
Hello–I am having similar issues on multiple players (Roku, WIndows 10 computer) on my network. I’ve tried multiple settings on the server side including turning off transcoding. It doesn’t seem to matter if it’s H264 or H265, AAC or AC3, whatever, MKV or MP4… I’m pretty sure this was some kind of server update so I might try to roll back.
Not sure which of the 30 log files I need to check to find the issue.
I am now able to play files that previously exited due to an error. Everyone, I would suggest checking permissions on your temporary transcode folder. I thought permissions might be an issue, so I created a new folder (on my SSD) and set it in the Settings -> Transcoder -> Transcoder temporary directory field. I am now able to play. This was affecting my Plex web app and apple tv, but not the Infuse player on apple tv - which has a better player than can direct play more things. This is why it would work in one app and not the other.
I fought with this issue for over a month. Since my dedicated media computer running Windows 10 Pro was also experiencing update issues, I reset the Windows installation. I used the recommended process for backing up and restoring the files and registry entries. The PMS data migrated successfully and all the settings seem to have saved.
I’ve also rolled the Plex Media Server back to 1.20.2.3402 and I’m afraid to update it for fear of the issues returning.
